Do any of your ocs watch/read anime/manga? What series would they be into if they do?
hm... yeah, some of them.
xiuying will watch tv or read books sometimes, but she mostly doesn’t like things that involve sitting still. she’d rather be doing physical stuff or going to parties lmao
meiling and lev watch stuff together. they don’t have the same interests, so they take turns choosing. they don’t mind trying out new stuff and they like doing commentary together (although half the time lev’s commentary is “the manga was better”)
alexa likes sports anime, especially eyeshield 21 bc football. since i personally don’t care for sports anime and haven’t watched most of them, i can’t really tell you much about that one.
sandhya isn’t really interested in that stuff, but she’ll watch with alexa sometimes. she usually has no idea what’s going on and has to keep asking what the characters’ names are.
thomas only watches things with his little sister, so he sees stuff like digimon or whatever kids watch these days. he doesn’t know it’s anime, though. he probably would if he paid more attention.
aabir’s a bit weird. he’ll watch things like pokémon one minute and deadman wonderland the next. he tends to watch obscure things just because, though, and his favorite anime is sasameki koto (miyako/tomoe is his otp).
riley saw an episode of sailor moon once as a kid. he thinks. maybe. there was a blonde girl yelling about the moon or something. maybe a cat??? idk
luca watched michiko to hatchin after a friend recommended it to him. he also likes cowboy bebop.
jess is full old-school when it comes to anime/manga. i’m talking dragon ball, jojo, captain tsubasa, saint seiya, kōya no shōnen isamu, mazinger z, cobra, kinnikuman, dr. slump, cat’s eye, fist of the north star, etc. they also like liar game and itsuwaribito.
Character ask: Lev and Xiuying? but instead of headcanon say a random fact about them?
oooh sure! :D
i’ll go with lev first
How I feel about this character: i love him,,,,, but i mean i kinda have to XD
All the people I ship romantically with this character: aabir
My non-romantic OTP for this character: meiling and xiuying. sibling power!
My unpopular opinion about this character: since i’m the only person who has any strong opinions on him, i don’t think any of them can be unpopular...
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i wish that asshole author would actually get around to writing >:(
my OTP: lev and aabir
my cross over ship: none
a headcanon random fact: lev is one of those autistics that Absolutely Cannot with spicy food
xiu’s turn!
How I feel about this character: she’s so much fun i love her
All the people I ship romantically with this character: luca, riley, and rashida
My non-romantic OTP for this character: meiling and lev lol
My unpopular opinion about this character: same as above
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: same as above
my OTP: xiuying/riley/luca
my cross over ship: none
a headcanon random fact: can’t cook. it’s not like anything she makes will kill you or whatever, but she doesn’t enjoy cooking so she’s liable to get distracted and wander off or just give up halfway through and get take out
Do any of your ocs have pets? What time of the day do they prefer, morning, day, evening or night? And similair, what are their favorite seasons? Have anyone of them ever been in a fistfight before? Did they win the fight? Their best/worst subject in school? Do they have some kind of phobia? Can they swim? Have they ever won any prices (spellingbee, sport, art)? Would they be able to play monopoly together or would that end in chaos?
So! Much! Question! *head explodes*
Do any of your ocs have pets?
To be honest, I haven't really thought about it much... Alex probably has a dog and I could see Luca having a cat.
What time of the day do they prefer, morning, day, evening or night?
I can't even fathom how anyone could be a morning person.... which probably means Aabir is one. Xiuying and Luca are definitely night people, and I'd say Sandhya is an evening person. Alex is probably a day person, and I don't think the others really care all that much.
And similair, what are their favorite seasons?
Xiuying likes summer, Meiling likes winter, Lev likes spring, and Riley likes fall. Not sure about the others.
Have anyone of them ever been in a fistfight before? Did they win the fight?
Xiuying has been in several fights, and has yet to be defeated.
Their best/worst subject in school?
Sandhya is good at most school stuff, Alex is a complete jock (p.e. nerd lmao), Lev is good at English when he pays attention, and the rest are either mixed bags or no longer in school.
Do they have some kind of phobia?
Meiling is scared of quite a few things, but that's all I'm gonna say about that for the moment.
Can they swim?
Everyone can swim except Sarah, Antoin, and Marcus. And they're just young lol.
Have they ever won any prices (spellingbee, sport, art)?
Xiuying has won more than one Olympic medal, which kinda makes other prizes a little less shiny, really.
Would they be able to play monopoly together or would that end in chaos?
Lev is the only one who ever wants to play Monopoly. Everyone else thinks it's too dangerous.
so... i’ve mentioned before a couple of times that i’m slowly (very, very, very slowly) working on my own original stories. and... well, the cast is pretty diverse (which makes sense, since i want to be a diverse fantasy author, duh). since i am but one person, i haven’t lived all of their experiences, and i’d love it if anyone had tips? hell, even for the experiences i have lived; i’m not turning down any advice.
anyway, here are the main characters:
Lev Abulafia– 15; half-Ashkenazi, half-Sephardi; raised in a fairly secular household (mom wears a tichel because she wants to, not because she’s super orthodox; they only really go to the local synagogue for Rosh Hashanah; etc.); autistic; has a crush on Aabir; lives with his mom and sometimes with the Wen family, who’ve essentially been actual family since before Lev was born
Meiling Wen– 15; at least half-Chinese (only met her dad); Lev’s sister and best friend; has known she was a girl since she was two; mentally ill (haven’t quite decided on a diagnosis yet, for multiple reasons, but psychosis is involved); celebrates the Jewish holidays but is uncomfortable calling herself Jewish; pretty nice but also lowkey loves sassing her siblings
Xiuying Wen– 22; half-Chinese (shares a dad with Meiling); Olympic gymnast and martial artist; diagnosed with ASPD at age 19; is the only person allowed to call Meiling “Mei” (because Meiling was afraid to ask her not to when she was younger and now she’s just used to it); likes partying and booze; stopped doing anything beyond weed at 21; pansexual and polyamorous; not super reliable but relatively self-aware; unlike Meiling, she does consider herself Jewish, since she was raised with Jewish holidays and culture as a major part of her life, even though she isn’t religiously or ethnically Jewish
Aabir ibn Isaiah al-Hashimi– 15; father is Sunni and mother is Shia (may change this bc I definitely don’t want to start anything and I’m not super educated on Sunni-Shia relations yet); has an older sister; bisexual; best friends with Thomas, even though no one can figure out why; believes that there is good in everyone, which leads to him trying to help people he sees “going down the wrong path” (like Thomas); plays basketball
Sandhya Ghatak– 16; born in Tripura, India and moved to the States at age 5 because her doctor was moving; has four arms (hence why her parents moved with her doctor); speaks Bengali, Hindi, English, and a little bit of Kokborok; closeted lesbian; dating Alex; fire powers (have to learn more about Hinduism and Agni before I go into more detail about that tbh); really loves makeup but is also very aware of where she buys it from, and is very, very clear about why she wears it (for herself, no one else); student council vice-president; straight-A student; very popular and probably the prettiest girl in the school; high anxiety and probably some other mental illness but I haven’t decided what yet
Alex(a) Howe– 16; closeted trans lesbian; was raised by super liberal parents and is hyper aware of his privileges; only out to Sandhya, so mostly uses he/him pronouns; doesn’t have a transphobic family but is choosing to remain closeted because he wants to be a professional football player; doesn’t like spicy food but is trying to increase his tolerance to impress Sandhya’s parents; had trouble saying Sandhya’s name at first so he practiced over and over again until he got it right; doesn’t use makeup himself but is pretty knowledgeable about it bc of how much his girlfriend likes it; pretty intimidating at first sight but honestly a giant teddy bear; learning Bengali; became friends with Sandhya in kindergarten and started dating her in high school
Jess Cooper– 15; nonbinary black teen; lives with their father and younger brothers; older half-‘sister’ went missing seven years ago; spends a lot of time working with their pastor helping out charities; PTSD from the death of their mother and SPD (Schizoid Personality Disorder - a “secret schizoid”); befriends Thomas after he learns why Aabir befriended him and tries to help him become a better person; doesn’t bind bc they can’t afford a binder; works two part-time jobs to help pay for younger brother’s medical expenses; sexuality currently undecided (I was going to have them be asexual, but I want to make sure I’m not stereotyping people with SPD before I finalize their sexuality)
Thomas Weaver– 15; lives with his abusive dad and younger half-sister Sarah; cis, white, poor, straight, Catholic, and super bigoted; only friend is Aabir; starts off as antagonistic until he overhears Aabir telling Lev and Meiling that he only befriended Thomas because he realized that Thomas fit the profile of a potential school shooter; becomes depressed and lashes out until Jess confronts him and he breaks down in front of them; character arc revolves around unlearning toxic behaviors, accepting others, and open-mindedness; develops a crush on Jess which leads to internal conflict when he realizes he sees them as a girl and therefore hasn’t come as far as he’d first thought
Sarah García Weaver– 6; Thomas’s younger half-sister; has lived with Thomas and his dad for since she was 3 when her parents died in a car accident; half-Mexican on her father’s side; often used by father and brother as “I can’t be racist” playing card; too young to really understand much; likes cars but plays with dolls bc her stepdad thinks cars are for boys only; wants to be a train conductor when she grows up
Riley Cooper– 21; Jess’s older half-brother who ended up in another dimension when he went to what was supposed to be a meeting for closeted trans teens; left before either he or Jess came out, so both referred to the other as “my sister” until they met up again; mother was a white woman from a racist family who got disowned for dating a black man and was hit by a car during a panic attack when Riley was 4; considered Jess’s mom to be like a second mother and was heartbroken to learn she’d died while he was gone; bisexual; ends up in a relationship with Xiuying and Luca; transitioned via magic while missing and worked as a soldier so he kinda looks like he can bench-press a tank
Luca Finley– 21; half-Romani, half-Native Hawaiian; was raised by Roma mother after other mom (I think the word is ‘Māhū’?) was killed in a hate crime; wants to learn about Shaktism but doesn’t have the resources to do so; bisexual; works as a bartender in a club Xiuying likes to go to; ends up in an open relationship with Xiuying, which Riley eventually becomes part of
there are other characters as well (Mr. Wen, Ms. Abulafia, Joe Weaver, Mr. Cooper, Pastor Kim, Pastor Kim’s wife, etc., but these guys are the main characters + Sarah - I’d put Jess’s younger brothers here too, but... this is already a lot of words, and also Marcus and Antoin are both walking spoilers)
I’m not sure, Lev finding the cookie jar empty and then going around trying to find who’s responsible? Then they go out and buy more? Just something short.
i think i can manage that. (in case i successfully make a series out of this, let me be clear that this does not qualify as canon)
-----The Tale of the Empty Cookie Jar-----
Ah, morning! When the day is just getting started, the world is awakening, and the birds are twittering away! And no sane human is cheerful, Barbara Abulafia thought to herself.
Typically, she wouldn’t be getting up this early, especially not on a weekend. But Xiuying was coming back from– well, from wherever she’d gone off to this time, and Barbara had agreed to go pick her up since her driver’s license had yet to be returned to her.
It wasn’t the first time Barbara had found herself picking up the daughter of her old time friend Jian - Xiu was practically her own daughter as well, after all - but it was one of the earliest in recent memory. She would’ve asked the young woman to take a cab or something, but quite frankly taxi drivers had enough to deal with and didn’t need to add “met Xiuying Wen” to the list of reasons they needed a raise.
Barbara shook her head to clear her thoughts and headed to the kitchen to grab an energy bar. She’d have a real breakfast later, she decided. Cereal or something. Healthy cereal, of course, like grape nuts or muesli. Yum.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw movement. Blinking once, she turned to see Lev and Meiling sitting at the dining room table, looking somewhat guilty. Well, Lev looked guilty. Meiling looked exasperated.
“What did you do?” she asked, holding back a yawn.
“It wasn’t me!” her beautiful, wonderful, incredible son who could maybe apply himself in school a little more and be less of a disaster magnet, said instantly.
“Well, it wasn’t me,” Meiling sniffed. Not that she needed to. Meiling was uncomfortably well behaved. Frankly, Barbara was worried that the young girl tried too hard to be accepted, but that wasn’t a thought for - she checked her watch - 5:30 in the morning.
“Someone took the cookies from the cookie jar,” Lev told his mother, sticking his tongue out at his sister. For a moment, the three of them were silent, all refraining from singing the song about cookies being stolen from a cookie jar. But it was too early for a spontaneous musical number, and Barbara was short on time.
“We don’t have a cookie jar,” Meiling added. “But one showed up while we were all asleep and now it’s empty.”
“Maybe a passing deity decided to drop it off,” Barbara offered, starting to make herself a cup of coffee. She’d need it if she wanted to get to and from the airport without any casualities.
“Santa’s not allowed in the good Jewish household,” Lev declared, causing Meiling to snort. A meme, Barbara presumed, grateful that she didn’t get the joke. It was true, though. They had a good long tradition of warding off the Claus with their handy-dandy menorah, and Barbara doubted it would stop anytime soon.
“It’s June,” Meiling said flatly. Lev shrugged.
“He’s got the free time,” he argued. Barbara sighed.
“Kids, just make some cookies, okay? I have to go get Xiu from the airport while there’s still an airport to get her from.” In the back of Barbara’s mind, she wondered if her son and honorary daughter had just tricked her into letting them make cookies, but she quickly brushed the thought aside. They both knew perfectly well that she’d have no problem with it so long as they didn’t try to eat them all in one go and saved an equal portion for her (she had, after all, paid for the ingredients).
“What about the cookie jar?” Meiling asked seriously. “I’m a little worried about it. I– I don’t think inanimate objects are supposed to just– start existing out of nowhere.”
“Isn’t that how the universe was created?” Lev asked, hiding a grin as his sister glowered at him.
“We’ll deal with the jar when I get back,” Barbara said decisively. “You’ve clearly already opened it, so if it turns out to have been Pandora’s box or something, I expect you two to put those evils right back where you found them. No excuses.”
“Actually, it was–” Lev began, but his mother cut him off.
“Yes, yes, a jar, I know, kid.” She yawned. “Just– don’t touch the damn thing. If it’s evil, we’ll deal with it, but I’m not having my kids sucked into an alternate dimension while I’m out, understand?”
“Gotcha,” Meiling nodded seriously. “We’ll wait until you get back to get sucked into an alternate dimension, then.”
“Glad we’re clear on that.” Giving her kids a tired smile, Barbara headed for the garage. By the time she and Xiuying returned, the cookie jar had disappeared, presumably headed for a better place. They all agreed to smash it should they ever see it again, but otherwise were content to move on with their lives.
More of your oc questions, you can get to them whenever you feel like it. Does Lev have any hyperfixations? What are they? (if you're comfortable answering)
Yes!!!! I don't have a full list yet but he loves stars and things related to space! He has a shirt that says "ask me about Europa" and Meiling put a sticker on it that added "(if you have a spare hour or two)" bc he can and will talk your ears clean off your head.
(Lev is fine with that and thinks it's funny btw he's not bothered by it at all)
Is there anyone Xiuying hasen’t tried to fistfight at least once? If she gets in trouble for fighting, who bails her out/act as a peace maker?
She doesn't typically fistfight just anyone - she likes the adrenaline that comes with fighting. Plus, she's an adult, so she lashes out a lot less frequently than she did when she was younger.
Meiling and Lev can both calm her down, as can Riley and Luca (though Luca likes riling her up more ;P), but Meiling is best at it.
