I want to use the word droid to describe a new gender, like droidgirl, droidboy or simply droid. Those are to refer about someone that doesn´t have any idea what gender even is but may have a certain preference for one or therefore conclude they don´t have any. I use droid as a short of android, robots and such, but I have seen that droid can also be ableist. I still can use the word or should I cut it right away just because it has that other meaning?
i’m definitely not the best person to be asking this to as i’m not the most informed person when it comes to ableism, sadly… so i really feel like i have no place in answering this question.
that said, if i were you and i knew that the word i wanted to use could be seen as ableist, i’d personally err on the side of not wanting to potentially come off as ableist. if you’re using it only to describe yourself personally, it may (or may not) be alright. i can’t really say. but if you’re hoping to make this new gender ‘a thing’ for people in general to identify as, it definitely would be best to exercise caution….
