oh i missed this yesterday! i guess i'll do top 7 anime/manga ♡
7. fruits basket (anime/manga)
uughhh idk if there is a better psychological drama out there. or a better-written, nuanced female main character than Tohru Honda, or a better romantic arc than Kyoru. Fruits Basket is not perfect (in its side characters' relationships) but it is fantastic. There's a reason it's so beloved!!
6. revolutionary girl utena (anime)
lesbians, swords, anti-capitalism, anti-patriarchy... simply necessary viewing for any fan of shoujo, magical girls, or classic anime. it's painful at many times but overall unmatched thus far in its depth, nuanced understanding of the matters it deals with and its characters, and of course it's perfect ending.
princess tutu has a very childish name, but it's literally the best anime i've ever watched. it has such a tight plotline, fantastic characters, fascinating world, and it executes its themes so stunningly. i think it's a must-watch for any fan of utena, of magical girls, and of ballet!
4. magic knight rayearth (manga)
rayearth is so underrated.... it's a high fantasy, isekai, mecha, magical girl rpg style adventure and only 6 volumes. and it's clamp so the art is gorgeous! it was so life-changing for me. it has so many elements that are attributed to madoka even though this came out so much earlier (such as the hidden darkness of their mission, among other things i won't spoil). i love the characters, i looove the ending, i love the story. i'm so excited for the anime remake in the works rn, bc this series really needs it, and bc it will ACTUALLY work with the 12-episode season perfectly (although it'll need a season for each part ofc).
qq has such a perfect balance between dark, heavy subjects and lighter parts and comic relief because the entire series is about mental health and taking care of yourself. with amazing costumes and suck weapons ofc!!!! the art is so gorgeous, the characters are so lovable, the romantic subplot is great, the story is simply incredible. and it's simulpub on the viz manga app so it's super accessible!!
so imagine a fantasy story in which the author actually delves deep into how the magic would shape society, and how these laws, shaped by magic, would shape its characters and their struggles. imagine a fantasy that explores ableism in a magic society and the nuanced morals of medicine. imagine a fantasy that has deeply nuanced characters that grow naturally and in accordance to the logic of their world and develop intrinsic values based on their understanding of their world. i have simply never seen a fantasy story (manga, book, or otherwise) so unafraid of actually exploring their world as magic shapes it, and it's incredible. not the mention the fantastic art and magic system!
the peak!!! action-adventure, fantasy, intrinsic political drama, and the some of the best character writing ever.... yona's growth is so incredible to see and so well-written. but all major characters are so nuanced. and the inter-political drama is really great. i really, really hope s2 happens bc no other series has deserved it more
