We’re thrilled to announce that Alex Turley (@alexturley___) will be joining us as our composer in residence for 2018! He will be composing a brand new work (to be commissioned from our current @ausculturalfund campaign) for performance in November and will be working on a number of new arrangements for other collaborations throughout 2018. #newmusic #melbourne #melbmusic —- The music of Perth composer Alex Turley has been described as “finely atmospheric” (RealTime), “rich and lush” (Argo) and “unapologetically pretty” (Partial Durations). Alex has most recently been working with the Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, Perth's minimalism specialists Intercurrent, and Brisbane's immersive art music collective Argo. His music has also been performed by Soundstream Collective, Voyces, Naya Chorale, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, Perth Symphony Orchestra, Maverick Saxophone Quartet, and Grey Wing Ensemble. City of Ghosts (2015) was selected by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to be performed in the 2016 Metropolis New Music Festival, under the baton of leading American conductor and six time Grammy award winner Robert Spano. Spano will conduct the work again with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2019. Other recent awards include the Penrith Symphony Orchestra's Young Composer Award in 2017, The Henderson Research Scholarship from SCM 2018, The Winstanley award from WAAPA 2016, Voyces ‘Aspire’ Winner 2014, and Best Film Soundtrack in the Revel8 Film Festival (2013). Alex's music has been featured on ABC Classic FM, 3MBS (Melbourne) and RTRFM (Perth). Alex holds a degree in Composition and Music Technology with First Class Honours from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and is currently studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He has participated in festivals and workshops including the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Composer School (2017), Soundstream Emerging Composers Forum (2016), CYBEC 21st Century Australian Composer Program (2015), WASO EChO Project (2014), and the Ku-Ring-Gai Philharmonic Workshop (2016).
