Hi! I just wanted to say that I'm seriously considering watching The Brave. I'm not a big fan of military/action series, but your posts make it seem so interesting!
I’m gonna give you five reasons on the off chance it might sway you (or anyone else…)
1. THE WOMEN For a military show about elite soldiers - 3 of the main 8 characters are women - and 2 are women of color. More importantly, they’re really excellent characters who just happen to be women.
stars-inthe-sky asked me if she should put the show on her to watch list and this was my first reason why - FURTHER - they do a good job with female guest characters too. The pilot is solid, but I really think the second episode of the show is when it finds a groove. In that episode, there’s a fantastic female guest star character.
2. FOUND FAMILY - I’m such a sucker for that trope and this unit is very much a found family for these characters.
Here’s who you’ve got:
Patricia (deputy director, stateside): the Mom everyone wishes they had, and that’s before you know she taught her entire sorority how to hustle the frat boys out of their poker money.
Noah (analyst, stateside): the brother who is a little bit older than everyone else and still a little bit awkward…in an endearing way, also: sweet and smart.
Hannah (field agent turned analyst, stateside): the sister who could be the most popular girl in school, but that was boring so she tried out for the boy’s soccer team cause there wasn’t one for the girls, also: a little bit haunted.
Dalton (the team’s commanding officer, stationed in Turkey): the brother who everyone listens to, slightly broody, and everyone knows he will put you down if you mess with his family; also: when in doubt, blow it up.
Preach (the team’s communications/tech guy, stationed in Turkey): the oldest, definitely the wisest, and absolutely the best of all of them (though he wouldn’t say that). Also: the family Yenta.
McG (the team’s medic, stationed in Turkey): Oh McG. Hot. Knows it. Loves his mom. Loves all women really. Snark-king. The brother who always leaves the toilet seat up and never fails to sincerely tell a woman she is beautiful simply because it’s true. Also: terrible at lying, his cover name is Walter.
Amir (the team’s ‘invisible man,’ stationed in Turkey): newest brother so there is some hazing, but you quickly realize this is the brother you take to buy booze when you’re both underage cause he looks a little soft and sweet, but holy hell this guy can talk his way in and out of any situation; a little bit lot scary. Also: man does he love his family.
Jaz (the team’s sniper, stationed in Turkey): little sister who will show you up if you count her out, could beat any of her brothers and they are all damn proud of that fact, trouble within the family stresses her out cause they all mean so damn much to her. Also: snark-queen.
3. STRATEGY - Listen, I could give two rips about military/action shows. What I like about this show is that so much of what makes them GOOD at their jobs is strategy. I like how in each new situation they manipulate and improvise to reach the goal. It’s badass.
4. JAZ & DALTON - I’ll totally admit one of the reasons I love this show are these two. The show just finished it’s 1st season run of 13-episodes. There are definitely hints of their feelings for one another in those episodes, but it’s not a major plot by any means. SLOW BURN, BABY! That’s what I like.
Seriously, look at the way he looks at her:
And her at him:
(Two fics I’ve written about these two: Talk to Me (one shot), and Her Guys (on-going multi-chapter)
5. PATTON - the real star of the show.
