Kenèp season has officially started! Also called Spanish lime or mamoncillo. After the brittle skin is creaked open, the fruit can be squeezed into your mouth and the juices and pulp sucked off. The seeds are edible and can be roasted like sunflower seeds or chestnuts. The pulp can also be used to produce a dark brown dye that was used by our native Arawak/Taïno inhabitants. It’s ‘Kenèp’ season! Ever since I was a kid, my favorite thing to do was to guess which fruits had twin seeds inside. Melicoccus bijugatus, commonly called Spanish lime, genip, guinep, genipe, ginepa, kenèp, quenepa, quenepe, chenet, canepa, mamón, limoncillo, skinip, kinnip, huaya, or mamoncillo, is native to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean to northern South America. The fruits, which are usually sold in bunches from street vendors, are usually eaten out of hand. After the brittle skin is cracked open, the fruit is squeezed into the mouth and the juice sucked from the pulp. In Columbia, the peeled fruits are boiled and the resulting juice is chilled and served as a refreshing drink on hot days (similar to kampot in case any Eastern Europeans saw these in the market and didn’t know what to do with them). In Mexico, the more acidic fruits are eaten with chilies, salt, and lime juice. Here in Haiti, we prefer to add these to a bottle of rum or corn alcohol to make a deliciously infused cocktail. The seeds are edible and can be roasted like sunflower seeds or chestnuts. ¡Vea pa’que chupe! Antídoto para el olvido fue una serie de infografías que desarrolló @parqueexplora junto al @instituto_humboldt en 2013 y que se expuso en Villa de Leiva, Boyacá. La muestra contempló 17 especies de frutos endémicos de nuestra región que ameritan ser priorizados en agricultura/consumo por sus usos y valores nutricionales. Tuve la fortuna de ilustrar cinco de estas especies para sus infografistas. Una época de estudio y empalme con científicos y biólogos muy bacana donde retomé la belleza de la anatomía (y fisiología) de las angiospermas como no lo hacía desde mi primaria. How many of you guys were aware that most seeds are edible and taste quite delicious? I’ve been experimenting here and there and have found some definite winners like this mamoncillo (aka Kennèp) seed. They can be roasted like sunflower seeds or chestnuts. Indigenous people of the Orinoco region of Venezuela boil and eat the seeds as a substitute for cassava.
