Today May 1st, 2019 is officially a new era in Japan with the new Emperor Naruhito ascending the throne. Every year on my new years postcard I have to write the year in Japan’s special era numbering system. So instead of writing the numbers 2019 I wrote “31st year of the Heisei era”. That era is over today so Next year 2020 I’ll have to write 令和2年 (second year of Reiwa era). Side note, the character for the zodiac animal on these traditional cards is a special one used just to denote that year, there’s a different normal character for regular use.
