He Swore He Wasn’t Contacting Aliens or Anything
Caught in the act? Bonar Hughes, 1918.
His neighbors in Melonville would have used words like, “quiet” and “loner” to describe Bonar Hughes, a self-admitted ham-radio enthusiast. Hughes worked at the local Shrewd ‘N’ Thrifty (the third convenience-store chain founded in North America), and kept mostly to himself. He was not married, had few (if any) friends and spent much of his time in the small shed behind his rented farmhouse. Acquaintances seeking to find some sort of common ground with Hughes would often ask him about his obsession with radio. Invariably, Hughes would respond rather nervously with something like, “I’m not talking to aliens, I swear!”
