Moros digs his fingers into his chest, over his heart. The pain isn’t physical, but he feels it. It stabs like a spear through him, hot agony erupting in its wake. He isn’t injured; can’t be, yet it hurts like a blow.

He isn’t doing it to himself – not willingly, at least. His fingers press into the smooth skin of his bare chest, absent any wound. What is it?

Mortals speak of heartbreak as if it is a real ailment, yet he knows better. This isn’t that. It cannot be.

Phantom pains strike at him every night, leaving no trace. It isn't until his path crosses the Princess of the Underworld's that Moros begins to learn how tightly their threads are entwined.

What on Eä was a high wheeler? Maitimo watched as Melkor brushed his long hair back with annoyance, then continued working – only to have his hair fall back again. Maitimo felt his eyebrows rise. He abandons the apples and gets back onto his feet, and searching his trouser pockets, he comes up with extra hair ties. He stands by Melkor and pulls the Vala’s long black hair, intent on braiding them away from his face.

Melkor freezes, stops working. Side-eyes him. “What are you doing?”

“Braiding your hair,” says Maitimo matter-of-factly. “Any more of it falling in your face and you will get annoyed with it. And anyway, you touch my hair unasked for many times, so I don’t see why you can’t be subjected to the same treatment.”
