Llandfair project, a community Communal food forest project.
This original plot was bought by one of my friends as a honeysuckle thicket green lot. Once the Honeysuckle was removed, triple shredded mulch was dumped along with many logs at the front. Melvin and Jaden hand progressively raised the grad 3 feet in the hope that it would eventually decay enough and settle at one foot of restored soil over the years, logs for retention were placed and paths were made to make it accessible for those to get from section to section. Eventually there is a plan for 3 quansets small glass frames for small houses and a walk in cold frame. The compost set up is a 3 open bin set up. A community fire and sitting place is set up in the back and will eventually have trellis around it for vertical growing space. Right now nursery raised beds are being made for the front in attempt to follow some traditional garden aesthetic and to get people interested. Once compost is ready it is to be vertical mulched into the mulch as core sections at 2 foot gridding before compost is applied to the surface till level with the log retention to garden in.
The persimmon in the back was on the property already and is male, we plan on placing a few in different sections around the perimeter and filling the shrub and understory perimeter in the back after the front traditional gardens are finished.
The idea of a communal garden is to food scape and stray away from plot gardens layout that suggests a private plot dedicated to a specific person. Many community gardens fall into plot gardening where plots are bidded for or associated to luck of the draw tickets instead of for everyone. We want people to feel free to use this as a community space for education, stewardship, growing and learning. I’ve only recently hopped in on this project since this winter when I met these two.
