#melvilleherskovits #notthefatherofafricanamericanhistory #efranklinfrazier #lorenzodowturner #fatherofgullahstudies #africanstudies #africanhistory As per usual these days among that 21st century Woke crowd, here they are lying again. These nuts are back rewriting history. These folks already believe that black people haven't done anything on their own. So it's no shock that they're claiming that Melville Herskovits is the father of African American history. Which is a strange claim to make considering that William Wells Brown in 1863 put out a book called "The Black Man: His Antecedents, His Genius, and His Achievements". That's 22 years before Herskovits was born. That book also kills the lie that we didn't use black prior to the 1960s. There also was the author Theodore P. Ford who put out "God Wills The Negro" in 1939, a book that he spent 20 plus years working on. Which means that Herskovits was a teen at the latest when Theodore started laying the groundwork for his book. In it he gave examples of surviving practices that not only linked to West Africa but the Nile Valley also. He gave examples from the church and daily life. Coincidentally Melville Herskovits and E. Franklin Frazier had a debate on what African practices were retained & what wasn't among African Americans. Frazier believed that everything was erased, interestingly he spoke about how the black church helped preserve some of the cultural aspects. Herskovits on the other hand argued that everything hadn't been erased. This brings us to Lorenzo Dow Turner who had started looking at the Gullah people and their practices in 1929. His research led to his putting out "Africanisms In The Gullah Dialect" in 1949. Before him the academic world treated the Gullah language as if it was substandard English. He showed the continuity of language and culture across the diaspora. his work created a whole new study. What Herskovits did was essentially make white scholars aware of what others before him had been doing. Once his colleagues found out, they decided to put a value on it. The Elvis & Eminem effect. Lorenzo Dow Turners work is houses at Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum here in DC. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_I1nTWhLgk/?igshid=1vembotflf9tg
