This is BRYAN LEE TILFORD (@BryanLeeTilford): BOJANGLES, acrylic and newsprint on canvas, 36x36, 2020 was inspired by MISSISSIPPI (PLATE 45) by Charles White. I chose as my masterpiece inspiration of the latter career style of the artist Charles White. The compositions are so well thought out and rendered with creativity and skill that many viewers may have admired the piece but could easily overlook the design aspect because of the visual simplicity. . These works are in stark contrast to my usual collage based, multi-image and multi-medium creations. This open, simple concept forced me to view the composition and execution of a piece in a different way. A simplicity of design that I am incorporating and interpreting in my own style of late. This style of design forced me to view the canvas and composition with fresh eyes. This reset and refocus created a renewed appreciation of Charles White and the evolution of his work throughout his career.

This is PAMELA SMITH HUDSON (@PamSmithHudson), DEED(ED)(UNSEEN and SEEN LANDMASS(ES), encaustic, oil and thread on panel, 24x24, 2020 inspired by Howardena Pindell, UNTITLED #19, mixed media, 1977. . I chose Howardena Pindell because I admire her ability to explore abstraction with unconventional materials and techniques while moving between monochromatic and colorful palettes to create mixed media explosions of poignant personal expressions while tackling issues of  racism and inequalities. As I researched more about her work I was moved by a story that helped shape the direction of her art. A childhood memory of hers, was traveling in Kentucky with her father and stopping at a root- beer stand and she noticed that her and the father’s mug had red circles on the bottom of their mugs and that moment when her father told her that these were mugs for people of color. The circle has been prominent in her work till this day as a constant reminder of this event. . I chose as my inspired artwork UNTITLED #19 a mixed media work on canvas that I had seen at Soul of a Nation exhibit at The Broad Museum last year. The piece was created in 1977. I admired her exploration in abstraction using hold punched colored circles of paper, glitter, and covered with a neutral background unifying the painting. As I started to create my artwork for the MASTERPIECE exhibit entitled DEED(ED)(UNSEEN and SEEN LANDMASS(ES) I decided to use encaustics, an ancient wax-based paint to create circular textured shapes adding thread to connect the floating colored shapes in the background and on the surface a flat dense neutral off white mass creating movement in stillness. DEED(ED) is about the importance of owning and caring for your land that was a topic always discussed in my family.

MASTERPIECE is a bold, international, multidisciplinary group exhibition whose aim is to establish a dialogue between contemporary artists of the present and Master artists of the past that will illuminate the ever-shifting issues consuming us today such as our volatile geopolitical environment, tackling pandemics & climate change, eradicating racism & social justice reform, and other challenges affecting our increasingly globalized world.  . This exhibition represents the first of a continuous, annual exhibition by Band of Vices. .
