Membergroups

Metamorphoses’ member groups are based on a modified version of so-called close encounters—a scale devised to measure just how close one has come to seeing, touching, or experiencing life from somewhere other than Earth. 

The groups reach from first kind to fourth and are based on a character’s level of interaction and, in a way, contamination by the matter from the Impact that formed the Novum Stretch. How often and how intensely they have come in contact with the phenomena determines their degree or “kind,” and the degrees, like people, are inherently changeable, depending on what happens to your character over time. 

Remember that awareness does not equal a higher degree of encounter. A character may have all the facts and seen the evidence printed out in front of them, but as long as they are beyond the Stretch’s reach, they are untouched. Time spent in the towns will have an impact, but a concentrated brush with the fog can spur even a newcomer to reach a higher degree.

FIRST KIND

The inexplicable and unnatural wonders of our towns have yet to pay you a visit, or perhaps you are the visitor here? The new kid on the block can brush it all off as foolish and absurd, but only for so long. What matters now is how the Impact will leave its mark on you. Will you let it in? POSSIBILITIES: A newly hired deputy learning the ropes, a former local returning home after decades away, a relocated family looking to settle down, a tourist wanting a selfie with ET.

SECOND KIND

The tendrils of change have begun to form, can you feel them? Perhaps not, for the ones of the second degree are not known for seeking out the change. You have been on Arkney soil for some time, but the shimmer is still only in the corner of your eye. Turn to face it, it’s calling. POSSIBILITIES: Bellmore locals who don’t venture "over the tracks", a journalist unraveling the mysteries, a hard-working school teacher who fears the rumors of the crash are true.

THIRD KIND

You have seen how light refracts and dances on the wall of fog, haven’t you? Does the low howling in the dead of night petrify you, or does it lure you in? The edge of what is true is so close; right there at the tips of your fingers. Go ahead, reach out. It’s too late to turn back now. POSSIBILITIES: Someone who dared to sneak past Morphos walls, a security guard patrolling the Whisperwood Forest, a single mom raising her kids at Sunflower Court.

FOURTH KIND

However you tilt your head, wherever the sun bears down, the mingling of you and the Stretch is unmistakable. You have it in your cells now. You have breathed it in and the separation is past rectifying. Infection is an ugly word. Changing, evolving, growing; it is all in the eye of the beholder. POSSIBILITIES: A member of the expedition teams, one of the children exposed to the substance in the accident, a Genesis veterinarian whose subject left a bitemark.

thumb butte, az neighborhoods 🏜️🧡

gas shoal ridge - $ - southwest boundary of town

to the southwest of downtown and the south of cunn trail, gas shoal ridge is one of thumb butte’s oldest neighborhoods, built up in the early days of settlement to make good on the promises thumb butte was meant to boast.  older, smaller homes and most of the town’s industrial services are located here, some stretching out before the town’s limits towards the williamson valley.  gas shoal ride also includes the sweet paradise trailer park and a very few larger, ranch homes settled into the valley instead of the more lush, shaded puck uplands.  residents here are hard to crack, live within their means, and have found a way to know everybody’s business.

cunn trail - $$ - west of downtown

if you follow cunn trail out of thumb butte’s downtown region, it winds through the neighborhood named after itself.  there’s not much by way of land, space between lots or anywhere for you to hide from your neighbors, but many people in town live along cunn trail for its convenience.  houses are older, nobody has ever heard of a homeowner’s association - we’re not saying anyone will tell you to clean your roof, but they’ll surely talk about it at mrs. greenleaf’s wednesday porch bitchin’ sessions.  something close enough to suburbia, enough happens on cunn’s trail to have you waving at your neighbors and locking your doors at the same time.

bull’s hitch - $$ - east of downtown

to the east of downtown is bull’s hitch, a large, wandering community of single-family homes and townhomes.  built up in the sixties and seventies, bull’s hitch still looks a little brady bunch, but without a fancy hgtv show to help fix them up, people are pretty content with the vintage style.  bull’s hitch is more family friendly, has too many kids playing outside too much of the damn time (if you ask old lady delmonte), and it’s close enough to the elementary school for parents to think they’re doing the right thing by their kids.  just don’t let them let out too much of the good air, those older homes don’t hang onto the a/c like they used to.

puck uplands - $$$ - northwest boundary of thumb butte

built in the shadows of the mountains and to the northwest of downtown, puck uplands has the fanciest name for a bunch of ranchers and farmers.  the lots here are larger, sure, but there’s no real sense of community here, except for the uplands kids who had to ride a forty-five minute bus to school together every day.  there’s good land here, though, the farther you go out, stuck between the mountains and watson lake, so people have been here for generations and taking advantage of it.  it’s not easy to buy into puck uplands, but every few years when a farm folds, you can bet there’s a few too many eager people at the auction.

butte head pass - $$$$ - base of thumb butte, northeast boundary of thumb butte

nestled in the foothills of the sierra prietas, butte head pass is a small, more exclusive community that leads to the head of thumb butte itself.  you’ll find people here claiming the hiking trails are theirs exclusively even though it’s absolutely not true, becky.  these homes are larger, have more space between them and have some of the best sunsets in arizona because they’re higher in the hills, but it all comes with a price tag and mr. gorecki absolutely snoops in people’s mailboxes on his morning walks.

Membergroup: Zenith (Upper Class)

Lesser only in name, those within the Zenith membergroup are not noble and yet share the same privileged thrones with their titled peers. Some choose to assimilate, to curry favor from the houses, chasing after the possibility of a granted title for themselves. Others refuse such acts of sycophancy, wanting instead to control their own fates and fortunes without the poisonous edge of noble interference.

Despite this duality, these individuals are always bound together by their uncontested affluence, both willfully oblivious to what occurs beneath the lofty vantage of their estates. Even those who are less self-serving are more likely to flourish in complacence–they practice disregard in order to avoid disruption to their status quo. Whether it is self-made or inherited, the boon of opulence and prosperity affords them a kind of safeguard, a deliberate blindness to the plight and perils of the greater populace.

Below are our free member groups that require absolutely no points or incentives to grab. There are currently 10 of them - yes we said currently because we do plan on releasing more as the site grows. The colors may be slightly different from what was shown in the previous preview but things were switched up due to skinning errors and such but they’re still very similar. 

Our Member groups on make a mess are inspired by Celestial Phenomena   and were heavily researched to help develop the aesthetics we wanted for each member group. There is a list of personality traits as well as 6 aesthetic images, but whether you think your character fits the aesthetic or just the color of the group is up to your interpretation and how it might fit your character's vibe.

exile ( #b53027 )  —  OUTCAST / DISHONORED / ON THE RUN .  those with a stain on their name. not here by choice, they either left their country voluntarily or were forced to leave. they come as disgraced businessmen, unpopular politicos, or prodigal children who've lost their way. they come as hellraisers, activists, or common civilians who got caught up in the wrong affairs. whether they enjoy their exile or resent it is up in the air. sometimes it seems nowhere except where they were sent away from is home. for some, their stories and origins are better left unsaid, but no matter the case, much like the rising sun, the stain still follows them wherever they go.

foreigner  ( #d28530 )  —  NONCITIZEN / ON VISA / HERE WITH AN END DATE .  whether a student, a worker, or on vacation to visit family, they’re here for a long while until what they need to do is over. very often, their time of stay has a beginning and end date, but that isn’t to say some haven’t extended the time or completely ignored it. quite a number of foreigners stick out, while others know how to blend in with their surroundings. to them, the island is a temporary home, but sometimes when love or opportunity comes their way, they try to make it permanent. like vines they grow and grow until it's noticed how long they've been around.

sightseer ( # d9b347 )  —  TOURIST / ON VACATION / HERE FOR FUN .  they come for the beaches, the palm trees, the water, the laughter, and the entertainment. they arrive on planes and on cruise ships, stepping foot into a place they’ll enjoy for however long they stay. no matter how they enter the country, they’re here as a visitor, catered to by the local government and well-appreciated as soon as they open their wallets. tourists are common figures this side of the island, making up a source of good economy so their numbers won’t be dwindling anytime soon. as one might find sand anywhere, so will they find them filling up every little hole on the island.

native  ( # 90a75c )  —  LOCAL / ISLANDER / CITIZEN .  a jamaican or caribbean local, to them the archipelago is home. they know the area and land better than anyone else, and make up a number of the business and property owners. with the sunshine and a chance to meet new people, they’re mostly a welcoming, happy bunch of citizens whose days are spent learning new stories beneath a cooling sun. they know each other and the streets in which they live intimately. it is a common perspective that the people of montego bay are as interesting as they are warm, a people who are full of surprises and stories to last the ages. as wide and bright as the heavenly sky.

wayfarer  ( # 5c747f )  —  TREKKER / TRANSIENT / TRAVELER .  more than anything, they’re always on the move, most with the sole purpose of seeing new things. some with the desire to travel to the globe and others with the wish to backpack and take high-quality photographs of their journey. they come as writers, athletes, or world-class hikers. they come as people with something to prove or people so entirely bored of their lives that they’d rather travel around than stay put. no matter what, they’re transitory, not likely to remain where they are for longer than they deem necessary. they are the unearthed, constantly moving like pollen, like the ocean itself.

expatriate  ( # 91b3bd )  —  FROM A FOREIGN COUNTRY / CHOSE TO STAY / HERE LONG-TERM .  those who left their country to live on the island. whether temporarily or permanently, they come as a mix of folk - the ones who can afford to do something so reckless or the ones who are too broke to leave. they come as teachers, authors, former students, old celebrities, or creatives looking for a new muse. they come as romantics looking for an old love or enemies looking for a chance at vengeance. their stay here is prolonged, and it is very likely it won’t end anytime soon. more loyal to themselves than any country, they, like seedlings, root where they like.

habitué  ( # ac929f  )  —  VACATION HOUSE BINCH / LOUNGING / EXTENDED VACATION .  those who own vacation houses or take extended trips to the island for leisure. they come through with their lavish spending and appetite for all things good and flourishing. at times, the island's shops and business owners practically cater to their needs. different than tourists, they know the area as well as their wallets, but maybe not as well as the locals. some are natives themselves who come in from other cities and others are foreign nationals looking to spend time elsewhere. in their eyes, montego bay is a revolving door, whether they stay for months or years is entirely up to them. like clouds, slowness is their luxury as they take their time to move through the sky.

the emperor - 

they enjoy taking on challenges themselves as well as giving others opportunities that challenge them to exceed themselves in some way. they are charismatic and have the physical and psychological capacities to persuade others to follow them into all kinds of endeavors—from starting a company, to rebuilding a city, to running a household, to waging war, to making peace. they have enormous willpower and vitality, and they feel most alive when they are exercising these capacities in the world. they use their abundant energy to effect changes in their environment—to “leave their mark" on it—but also to keep the environment, and especially other people, from hurting them and those they care about. they are self-confident, strong, and assertive. protective, resourceful, straight-talking, and decisive, but can also be ego-centric and domineering. they feel they must control their environment, especially people, sometimes becoming confrontational and intimidating. they typically have problems with their tempers and with allowing themselves to be vulnerable.

the fool -

the hermit -

Independent, innovative, and inventive, they can also become preoccupied with their thoughts and imaginary constructs. they become detached, yet high-strung and intense. they typically have problems with eccentricity, nihilism, and isolation.

the hierophant -

they maintain their identity by seeing themselves as fundamentally different from others. they feel that they are unlike other human beings, and consequently, that no one can understand them or love them adequately. they often see themselves as uniquely talented, possessing special, one-of-a-kind gifts, but also as uniquely disadvantaged or flawed. they are acutely aware of and focused on their personal differences and deficiencies. they are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. they are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, but can also be moody and self-conscious. withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also feel disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. they typically have problems with melancholy, self-indulgence, and self-pity.

the lovers - 

they are either the most genuinely helpful to other people or, when they are less healthy they are the most highly invested in seeing themselves as helpful. being generous and going out of their way for others makes they feel that theirs is the richest, most meaningful way to live. the love and concern they feel—and the genuine good they do—warms their hearts and makes them feel worthwhile. they are empathetic, sincere, and warm-hearted. they are friendly, generous, and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering, and people-pleasing. they are well-meaning and driven to be close to others, but can slip into doing things for others in order to be needed. they typically have problems with possessiveness and with acknowledging their own needs.

the magician -

the moon -

the moon demonstrates the universal temptation to ignore the disturbing aspects of life and to seek some degree of peace and comfort by “numbing out.” they respond to pain and suffering by attempting to live in a state of premature peacefulness, whether it is in a state of false spiritual attainment, or in more gross denial. more than most, they demonstrate the tendency to run away from the paradoxes and tensions of life by attempting to transcend them or by seeking to find simple and painless solutions to their problems. they are accepting, trusting, and stable. they are usually creative, optimistic, and supportive, but can also be too willing to go along with others to keep the peace. they want everything to go smoothly and be without conflict, but they can also tend to be complacent, simplifying problems and minimizing anything upsetting. they typically have problems with inertia and stubbornness.

the star - 

when they are healthy, they really can and do achieve great things in the world. they are the "stars" of human nature, and people often look up to them because of their graciousness and personal accomplishments. they know how good it feels to develop themselves and contribute their abilities to the world, and also enjoy motivating others to greater personal achievements than others thought they were capable of. they are usually well regarded and popular among their peers. they are self-assured, attractive, and charming. ambitious, competent, and energetic, they can also be status-conscious and highly driven for advancement. they are diplomatic and poised, but can also be overly concerned with their image and what others think of them. they typically have problems with workaholism and competitiveness.
