Synthetic Biology Circuits Combine Memory, Logic MIT engineers have created genetic circuits in bacterial cells that not only perform logic functions, but also remember the results, which are encoded in the cell’s DNA and passed on for dozens of generations. The circuits, described in the online edition of Nature Biotechnology, could be used as long-term environmental sensors, efficient controls for biomanufacturing, or to program stem cells to differentiate into other cell types. Since I am looking at memory as a theme for my project, I decided to ask my parents about their time at Margate, what they did, remembered, etc. They visited Margate as they heard it was a popular seaside destination, it was also their first visit to a British seaside, and they wanted to compare it to the beaches in Vietnam. They did all the usual tourist things, also said that they didn't really enjoy it much, and the beaches in Vietnam were nicer. I am not entirely sure what I want to do for my final piece, but for the time being I am going to continue with different visual approaches. Above is a fabric collage/scrapbook style image I made using a photo of my parents at Margate, using different fabrics, papers and a seashell.
