126) 🌟 Memories of Murder is one of those genre movies capable of playing with your emotions until the very last scene. Only great modern authors like Bong Joon-ho have the perfect timing to build suspense or to make you feel embarrassed with grotesque situations, and that’s because they are able to imagine the movie before it’s actually shot. The Korean sensation has proved to be a master of cinema, he dealt with monster movies (The Host), science fiction (Snowpiercer), political/satirical comedy (Okja), but his first real success is with this magnificent thriller which was a box office hit in South Korea in 2003. In a small Korean province in 1986, three detectives struggle with the case of multiple young women being found raped and murdered by an unknown culprit. There’s nothing to complain about the technical aspects: it’s beautifully shot, the cinematography reaches high standards for a korean film and the direction is simply fantastic. Long takes, steady cam, wide shots, close ups; Bong Joon-ho knows how to make you feel so immersed in this small village far from urban life where everybody knows everyone. Character development is another big thumbs up because the detective from Seoul shows up as a complete unknown, but he immediately proves to be more skilled than his local colleagues. They have to face protests for their actions over some innocents, and it’s in those cases that drama and black comedy stand out. Kim Sang-kyung’s character seeks redemption in the final act for his failure and Song Kang-ho’s performance stands above everyone especially in the last scene when he looks directly into the camera as if he’s searching for the killer between the spectators, beginnings are also endings. Memories of Murder, a cold blooded thriller that is simply one of the best murder mystery of this century.
