The Royal Canal… one of Ireland’s major inland waterways. I won’t do a history lesson… that would keep us here for a week or longer. I’ll just say the advent of the railroad and later road transport seriously affected the feasibility of the inland systems all over Europe. The Royal Canal suffered to such an extent that it fell into disrepair and in places was almost filled in. A smelly ditch, was the way it was described in many places.
Because the canal linked towns and often cut through the centre of these towns, local enterprise got involved – to restore sections of the waterway. Eventually, groupings began working together and by 2010 the canal was reopened. It flows from the River Liffey in Dublin all the way to the Shannon, passing though quite a few counties and stretching the length of 146 kilometres.
The highest point is somewhere near the midpoint town of Mullingar where a feeder from Lough Owel supplies water, in both directions. The navigation across country is made possible by utilising 46 locks to either rise or drop boats along the route. Simple yet ingenious, these gates open or close… allowing boats to enter the individual chambers that either flood or drain… the height of technology in the 17 and 18 hundreds – and still effective today!
OK… I have written many posts in the past about my walks along the Royal. I have met great folk along the canal and spent time on board barges. So… it will be remiss of me not to revisit the canal… even if it is only virtually! I hope you enjoy just a few of the many photos you will find if you look back at the blog!
Please see the Wiki-P RC Page… there are so many interesting facts to learn…
PS – Looks to me as if Nellie fever is waning… maybe she should have a break? Do let me know, please…
My Weekly Photo Challenge – R for Royal Canal The Royal Canal... one of Ireland's major inland waterways. I won't do a history lesson... that would keep us here for a week or longer.
When seeing Murtagh’s Meadow’s take on this week’s challenge it reminded me of some the up-shot photos I have taken in the past while. Spring and summer this year have been great for blue sky photos… so, as per usual… I’ll throw together a happy gallery! But… before I do that I must first share a tale about the Sistine Chapel. Do go and have a look at Patti’s post… look at her fantastic inspiration for this week’s challenge, you’ll understand why I was reminded of the tale I’m about to share.
Some years ago, we were privileged enough to visit Rome. Seeing Michelangelo’s work was, for me, a dream come true. Read an old post here and you’ll understand. During our visit we crammed in everything a tourist will do. Apart from one little detail, we saw a few places in the standard way. Yes, yours truly doesn’t always conform to tradition… or rules!
We followed the guide into the Chapel… obediently doing the sheep-flocking thing! The only problem… I wanted to see Michelangelo’s ceiling masterpiece properly. So, I got down on the floor and lay flat on my back! Yes, I did!
My good lady was quick to point out that I was committing a heinous offence! Get up, I was told! The looks on some of the faces… almost better than the art! Someone pointed to the “No Photography” signs… mmmmm… yes, I was laying flat on my back… and taking photos! Yes, I promise! Anyway… I was soon told that it is disrespectful to lay on a church floor! No, said I… I’m a protestant… we can even crawl on the floor… it’s OK! Anyway… we have long lost the photos… an ancient PC’s hard-drive took them to cyber heaven… or cyber hell? So… back to the gallery I promised! Just look up… wherever you are… there’s a good chance you’ll see some beauty about you!
PS – Remember… Nellie will visit again at noon… Irish time!
PPS – Happy Hump Day!

We’ve reached “O”… going along just fine. As I believe my blog is mostly a celebration of the outdoors I think I’ll use the word “out” as the photo tag to put together today’s gallery. As many of you know, I’m a South African, and have always loved the great outdoors! However, living in Ireland has it’s drawbacks… the smaller outdoors is often wet… and even more often cold and wet! So, what do I do? Dress appropriately, take the umbrella… for the protection of the camera… and get out of the house! So… you may see wet and dry pics… bright pics… dull, misty pics but they’ll all be outdoor pics!

I really don’t know how many weekly photo challenges I completed. Some weeks, when the topic fitted my mood at its best, I did more than one post. That means I’ve done hundreds. I suppose I could do a count but hey, why? Believe me… hundreds! Anyway… mostly I threw in galleries. I love them and usually you humour me and enjoy my extravagance. That means for this last weekly challenge I’m going to give you another gallery. But what? I think my all-time favourites would be sunrise and sunset pics. So, as a retrospective… here we go through many of my best ever photos!
A Retrospective Look at All-Time Favourites I really don't know how many weekly photo challenges I completed. Some weeks, when the topic fitted my mood at its best, I did more than one post.
Saturday Story - A Calendar Series?
Saturday Story – A Calendar Series?
Greeting friends! No six word story today!
I have, for years, been contemplating the feasibility of doing a calendar. No, not out of vanity but more because I have so many photos that folk have commented about. I occasionally send snaps to people, if they request a specific pic. However, instead of requesting the odd pic, please feel free to remind me of the specific photos you would like to see…

Friday Phone Fun!
Yes, yes… I know… phone isn’t with a “F” but it makes for a bit of alliteration, doesn’t it? Yep… so, there you have it. As I’ve often said, it’s my blog so I can do as I please! OK, enough messing. Today’s photo has a wee challenge involved. See if you can spot the target?
Right, you have yourself a great day! May your weekend be filled… maybe even with your own phone fun!

Magic Moment - Thanks!!
Magic Moment – Thanks!!
I sat for quite some time, trying to get this kind of magic moment shot. The sparkles really came up just the way I was hoping! Yesterday there was a momentous moment to enjoy here at OMBH… I eventually reached the 200000 hits mark! I hope I can double that milestone in less that the seven years it took me to reach the 200K mark! Thanks to all of you who have made my blogging so rewarding! Yep,…
