"Kids are people" is a very irrelevant phrase. Children are people, sure. People who haven't fully developed yet, who oftentimes are unaware of the realities of consequence and the effect one dumb mistake can have on the rest of their lives. People whose worldview is usually pretty narrow by default, who have a difficult time with perspective (how easy can it be to think like an adult when you haven't yet been one...?).
Part of a parent's role is to protect. The unavoidable reality is that no matter how conscientious a parent tries to be, their efforts at protecting their children will always be damned by their children.
