Menez (1926 – 1995) was born in Lisbon. She was an autodidact, who started painting at the age of 26, without having attended any art school. Menez held her first individual exhibition in 1954. She had a scholarship in London from the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1960, and later, between 1965 and 1969. In 1961, she won the second Prize in Painting, in the II Exhibition of Fine Arts from the Gulbenkian Foundation. In 1990, year of her consecration as a painter, she was awarded the Pessoa Prize. In that same year the Gulbenkian Foundation held a retrospective of her work. Besides painting and drafting she produced various works in ceramic, screen printing, and tapestry. Her collaboration with Portalegre’s Tapestry began in 1967.
