The Myth of the Given by birbee Via Flickr: by Tessa Scarley O'Brien O'Brien is obsessed with the state of contemporary gender and sexuality politics, and the ways that we can improve the experience of individuals through emancipation from the binary gender construct. The title of the work is from the Xenofeminist manifesto and relates to the human tendancy to believe in that what we are told is "natural" or "right" in society is inherently right.
When Words Fail by birbee Via Flickr: by Helen Cooper In her work Helen Cooper explores the concept of empathy in non-verbal language, Through the right hemisphere of the brain we learn and understand things intuitively and emotionally. The left-hemisphere provides the language to describe it. Sometimes we feel emotions so intense that our left hemisphere struggles to find words to describe it specifically, and it is in this disconnected space that Cooper situates her imagery.
