Daily MCO Drink #319, MCO Day #321: AMERICAN BEAUTY, made with 3 parts Hennessy VSOP cognac, 1 part Giffard Menthe Pastille, 1 part Dolin Dry vermouth, 1 part Giffard Rose liqueur, 1 part fresh orange juice, shaken over ice and strained, then float 1/2 shot red wine on top. Adapted from a recipe found on Difford’s Guide which in turn was adapted from a recipe in David Embury’s 1948 ‘The Fine Art Of Making Drinks’. The original recipe uses grenadine, but I couldn’t bear the taste of grenadine messing up the balance of the other spirits, so I replaced it with rose liqueur instead. And waddayaknow, it works. The heavy hit of cognac forms a strong foundation for the mint and orange juice to lay on, with the rose adding floral notes and the vermouth giving it a drier texture. All that is wnhanced by sipping it through the dark fruit notes of the red wine.
