It is hard to give up a child,
Whether that child has blinked into existence
Or whether that child is an idea, a dream within you.
It is hard to give up a child,
Especially when as a kid you loved to make all of your Barbie dolls mothers.
Not knowing whether you will hold a baby that you grew yourself that is born of the love between you and your husband
Is hard.
It is hard to give up a child,
It is motherly instinct,
Some feeling you’ve had inside of you to nurture, to love, to care, and you ache to channel that energy into a tiny, squirming, pink, bundle.
It is hard to give up a child
Even is that child does not exist yet,
Even if she is a slew of faces spilling into my dreams at night,
Even if she may never exist.
