I’m a sucker for a charcoal mask of any kind, from any brand. As long as it doesn’t contain harsh, pro-aging denatured alcohol, I’m down. For some reason, a lot of brands think they need to load charcoal masks with alcohol, presumably because they’re generally targeted to oilier skins. Even though alcohol is the last thing an oily skin needs, it gives the effect of soaking up the uncomfortable surface oil for an instantly refreshed, cooling effect. But I digress. City Block Purifying charcoal clay mask from my friends at Clinique is infused with Charcoal Powder, Kaolin, Silica and Magnesium Aluminum Silicate — all very high up on the ingredient list. The texture is so dope. I love the creamy application and fresh, clean, natural-earthy smell! HAPPY MASKING MONDAY, EVERYONE! _______________________________________________ Did you catch my YouTube video for #selfcaresunday yesterday? I took the new Jaxon Lane Bro Mask Eye Gels out for a test drive. Okay, I didn’t actually go anywhere. I test drove them in the bathroom of my Brooklyn apartment. The brand’s Bro Mask is one of my fave sheet masks for brightening and rehydrating skin. So I was super pumped to try them out. Most important to me is that these new eye masks are infused with 3% Niacinamide — my favorite antioxidant with like 87 benefits for the skin, one of which is brightening. Yes, yes, and yes! Did you know that you can’t overdo it with Niacinamide? It’s one of the few powerful actives that you can use in multiple products in the same routine. The fact that these under-eye hydrogels lock it in makes the Niacinamide even more effective at brightening dark circles. They’re also infused with caffeine to help alleviate puffiness, HA to lock in moisture and a trio of antioxidant botanicals: green tea, licorice, and ginger root. DO YOU USE ANY KIND OF EXFOLIATING PADS ON YOUR FACE OR IN YOUR UNDERARMS? _______________________________________________________ #iykyk! No one loves an acid-infused exfoliating pad more than I do! There are so many bad ones out there, including the OG pads — aka the Dr. Gross alcohol wipes! I will never understand how a chemist could put drying denatured alcohol and horrifying Glycolic Acid together. Okay, I actually do understand why a chemist would do that. Denatured alcohol is a penetration enhancer, driving actives deeper into the skin barrier. So there’s greater efficacy. But at what expense? It also weakens the skin barrier. If you know Skinfix, you know they’re focused on skin barrier health — and strengthening (not weakening!) the skin barrier. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU GET A ZIT? _______________________________________________________ I gotta say I haven’t always had the greatest success with acne spot treatments so my expectations for First Aid Beauty’s new FAB Pharma BHA Acne Spot Treatment Gel 2% Salicylic Acid were a bit tempered. I usually just use The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Solution or a Zitsticka acne patch (but I’m out!). I do trust FAB and consider it the best skincare for sensitive skin; acne I wasn’t sure about. But the new BHA Acne Spot Treatment Gel actually works. And it came just in time for me. The day I got my hands on this was the day I got my first zit in weeks — right in the middle of my chin. A few dabs and a day later, I forgot it was even there. FAB promises their new spot treatment gel will “visibly improve blemish-prone skin in as little as 24 hours”. It sure delivered. I’m almost excited to get another zit just to try it again to be sure it wasn’t a fluke. So what is it that makes this one so effective? A deep dive into the INCI and I see the 2% Salicylic Acid. There’s also the curious addition of two AHA’s — Glycolic Acid and Citric Acid — as well as Willow Bark Extract, a natural BHA which functions similarly to Sal Acid. In classic FAB fashion, there are multiple skin soothing actives: Urea, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Bisabolol, Colloidal Oatmeal, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Feverfew Extract and Radish Root Ferment Filtrate. This is kind of an extra-ordinary spot treatment for sure. READY FOR A LITTLE PORE MAINTENANCE? MEET FAB’S NEW CALAMINE PORE PURGING MASK! _______________________________________________________ Happy #maskmonday​ everyone! I really did the most yesterday for #selfcaresunday. (Check out my new YouTube video. Link in bio!) I practiced weekly pore maintenance with First Aid Beauty’s new Calamine Pore Purging Mask and a pack of vegan, gluten-free Oreo cookies. FAB’s new clay mask is among the best masks for clogged pores and oily skin. If you’ve ever suffered from a poison ivy rash, you know calamine lotion is the only thing that soothes the damn itch! The Calamine Pore Purging Mask is formulated with both kaolin and bentonite clays to draw out impurities as well as soothing calamine powder, chamomile and feverfew. Salicylic Acid gets deep down into pores to dislodge hardened sebum and exfoliate dead surface skin cells. There’s also a touch of tea tree oil in it to help control excess oil and purify skin. I’m not a fan of essentials oils but FAB says the level is super low and just enough to be beneficial without the irritating drawbacks. I love the subtle graininess of the calamine powder though! It gives it just a slight physical exfoliating effect. This is serious innovation. I reminds me a little bit of the popular pore mask from philosophy. That’s got a super high level of Salicylic Acid in it and I actually burned my nose a few years back leaving it on too long. No issues with FAB’s new baby. Like where did this even come from? You know I have a nose for alien technology — like the Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Milk and One Skin’s OS-01 Topical Supplement. These kinds of products are so unique and innovative they seem like they’re from another planet. So yeah, the Topicals Faded Serum for Dark Spots & Discoloration is out of this world. I’m a huge fan of brightening products and this stuff takes brightening up a notch. It keeps selling out at Sephora and I get why. The milky, silky, gooey serum is LOADED with skin brighteners. And I mean every brightening active used in skin care — except Vitamin C. I bet it’s because Vitamin C is such pain to formulate with that they thought “we don’t even need it if we’ve got everything else.” No joke, the Faded Serum is infused with Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Alpha-Arbutin, Glutathione, Kojic Acid, Licorice Root Extract, Melatonin and Turmeric Root Extract. I told you! Naturally, with a complex of brightening actives that extensive, I was expecting to experience some irritation. But I did not. Perhaps the Shea Butter, Glycerin, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Allantoin, Squalane, and Bisabolol help to mitigate any sensitizing effects. I’ve been using it now nightly (and sometimes in the AM) nearly every day for 2 weeks and my complexion is super glowy. Not that I was dull before Faded. But even my facialist noticed my skin was lit. WHAT’S YOUR PORE MAINTENANCE ROUTINE? _______________________________________________ If you missed my YouTube video for #selfcaresunday yesterday, be sure to check it out. (link in bio!) I took YTTP’s Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask out for a test drive — and a little pore maintenance. I’d been seeing this clay mask all over the place and was beginning to feel serious #fomo. Glad I finally got past it. YTTP’s new pore-refining mask is one of the best clay masks for oily skin — most prone to pore clogging. It’s made with 3 types of oil-absorbing clays: volcanic clay, white clay and French green clay. Plus, it’s infused with one of my fave actives – Niacinamide. (Why isn’t that in everything?!) At a 2% concentration, it can help to dissolve embedded gunk in pores. I don’t know if that’s enough to brighten skin. But Niacinamide is a miracle active and I can’t get enough of it. There’s no better pore maintenance than a healthy dose of Niacinamide combined with a BHA. The Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask has both — with about a 1% concentration of Red Willow Bark, a natural source of BHA. BHA’s like Willow Bark Extract and Salicylic Acid are the best skincare for clogged pores. Like Niacinamide, they help to dislodge hardened sebum that can become embedded in pores and draw in dirt and pollutants. It’s this cycle that often results in acne breakouts. So, a little pore maintenance each day is a must!
