In a world swimming and I mean absolutely swimming with pistol and rifle optics, how exactly does a newcomer stand out from the rest of the pack? In my experience 2 main things come to mind when asked this question and that is price, because everyone is quick to ask what the price is and the second being features/quality. Recently I had the opportunity to add yet another optic to my collection and this time from Meprolight. Meprolight is a company that has a long standing reputation of producing great quality rifle optics as well as pistol night sights. I’ve personally never ran one of their rifle optics but have had their pistol night sights on a number of pistols throughout the years and they’ve never disappointed. Meprolight made the decision to re-invent their rifle optic line and add an entire new line of pistol optics recently including the MPO DF version which is the subject of today’s discussion. You can check out the entire new line up at Brownells, but let’s first talk about the MPO DF which is at the bottom of their line up.
When I first picked up the MPO DF pistol optic I was amazed at the quality out of the box. It’s very similar in my opinion to the Trijicon RMR that I have as ell, but at a 3rd of the price. It utilizes the RMR footprint, but does so without the need to remove the optic to exchange the battery. This particular optic has a 3.5 MOA red dot which isn’t too small or too large for most people. It does have some starbursting, but that’s due to my eyes having a bad astigmatism. Even optics much higher priced I get the same effect unfortunately. It is also IPK7 waterproof and has an automatic brightness control which helps tremendously in changing lighting conditions. One thing that’s a tad different is how it just has a single button to adjust the brightness of the dot itself unlike most competing optics that have a positive and a negative button to cycle up and down and turn the optic off. This is more of a no frills approach in my opinion. In addition to all of these features mentioned, it also has a sleep mode or shake awake like others seem to have these days. Again, no issues there.
The price is definitely right on this optic as well as the quality. The time I’ve had with it at the range mounted up on my Beretta M9A4 have been very positive overall. One of the items that I did struggle with some was getting used to the smaller window when compared to some of my other pistol optics. This is more of a me issue and with training and after some reps I started to pick it up just fine. The other kind of negative to this optic has to be the battery life. It is only around 15,000 hours, but I’d expect it to be much longer in reality with the sleep function. Any pistol dot used for defensive purposes should have the battery exchanged on an annual basis anyways.
So overall I’m really enjoying this optic especially at the price of admission. Meprolight is most definitely on my radar for future purchases of their new and improved optic line across the board. Luckily for me, Brownells seems to carry all of the available options even though they have come in and out of stock on a regular basis. Be sure to try out a Meprolight optic for your next pistol optic and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price point.
