Fingers unthreaded languidly from behind a dark head of hair and he made to sit upright when something lashed firmly about his ankle. Cold and tight, it wrenched the startled gasp from him and he jerked his leg hastily up, scrambling further back onto the dock and spraying water about him in a flail as he landed hard on his elbows.

For half a heartbeat lodged in his throat, he feared some furious octopus had found him.

Upon hearing a short burst of familiar laughter from the water, he knew it was worse.
