Why are there more new Malay voters, asks Bersih 2.0

PETALING JAYA, April 7, 2015:

There is an increase of voters from an ethnic group associated with the dominant ruling party in marginal seats compared to demographic trends, claimed the coalition for Fair and Clean Elections (Bersih 2.0).

In a media conference here today, the electoral reform group said according to the latest findings of Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (Merap), voter registration from the first quarter of 2014 in 13 marginal federal seats was skewed towards the Malays.

The 13 marginal seats are from Pahang, Selangor, Johor, Perak and Kuala Lumpur.

Merap researcher Lee Wee Tak showed reporters the statistics where Malays in Perak, for the first three quarters of 2014, accounted for 78.3%, up from 48.4% of the total voters during the 13th General Election (GE13).

In Selangor, Malay voters in GE13 were about 49.7% but now the new voters went up to 76.1% compared to 34% Chinese voters during GE13, now at 15.2%.

“Another example is at Gelang Patah parliamentary seat. The percentage of Malay voters in GE13 was at 33.7% while Chinese voters was at 52.4%. However, according to the new voters statistic, the percentage of Malay voters is now at 91.3% while the percentage Chinese voters is at 3.6%,” said Lee.

Bersih 2.0 and Merap said they did not intend to “play a racial card” regarding the voter registration data, but were merely looking at what they said could be Umno’s calculated move and strategy to increase support in the next election.

Zoe Randhawa, the Bersih 2.0’s advocacy and education officer, said the drastic increase in newly registered Malay voters could be tied to Umno.

“If you look at it from what Umno believes and its political ideology, it believes its support base comes from Malays. BN believes there was a Chinese tsunami in GE13 and it believes it strongly.

“If you look at it from Umno’s point of view, how would it go about registering voters? If the party sees its support base as purely Malays, it is going to try to register more Malays,” she said.

Bersih 2.0 said registration of new voters was the “key battleground” for political parties, where four million Malaysians were expected to be eligible to vote in the 14th General Election in 2018.

In GE13, about 2.6 million, or 20%, of eligible voters had registered to cast their ballots for the first time.
