Remember when McLaren did a version of the Lincoln LS? It had slightly darker wheels, and quad exhaust tips. The company simultaneously held a roadcar top speed record (decidedly not Lincoln LS-related), while being a ghost in the public imagination. No one really cared, and that actually made it kind of cool. Enter the Merc/Laren, with its front-quarter-panel-exit exhaust. And room for golf clubs. Somehow this factoid wasn’t quite as cool as the side-storage-story on the F1, even though it kinda ought to be. Maybe it’s that I still recall the SL prototype it was based on, and found the ‘futuristic design’ already dated when launched. After a slump, the collector market is starting to pick on this weird beast, but it will always strike me as somehow less than the sum of its parts.
