{♔} — Sora supposed he should’ve been more surprised the first time it happened, the first time the thought popped into his head. Nothing preceded it; there was no train of thought. One moment the duo were chatting aimlessly with milkshakes between them—neither could decide on a flavour so got two to share—and the next Sora was rendered speechless for a moment. Not that Prompto noticed, of course; the blonde was far too busy rambling about his latest trials and tribulations.
Sora smiled to himself as he sipped the milkshake. It wasn’t such a bad thought, he supposed.
The next time was somewhat more expected considering that situation in which it arose. Sora was adamant that he could outsprint Prompto. Sure, the guy had more practice in general but Sora had practically grown up on a beach; running on sand was a whole new level. They were almost nose to nose in their posturing. Sora could count almost every freckle scattered along the blonde’s cheeks. It would’ve been so easy to lean forwards those extra couple of inches.
Instead, he took off at full speed, grinning at Prompto’s yelp and cries of cheating and not fair.
The third time he wasn’t even around the blonde. Their friendship born from likeness and a mutual energy had developed further into something more intimate, more serious, where they could call the other at odd times and unload without fear. Sora stared at his phone screen, watching the minutes tick by until the screen eventually clicked to black. Would he have called Prompto if it hadn’t been for the time zones? He should be asleep by now, shouldn’t he? Sora didn’t want to wake him for something so silly. He could check on him in the morning; he was sure he was fine right now—he’d have told Sora otherwise. It was times like this he wished they lived closer, so he could be there to kiss the other’s forehead and tell him everything would be okay in person.
He almost did it the next time. He was moments from it. Prompto had been fiddling with the settings on his camera, entirely engrossed in his task. Sora left him to it, not even pretending to understand the device. Instead, he stood to the side and watched as Prompto scrunched his nose, brows furrowing in frustration as a sigh left him. His eyes lit up suddenly, expression slackening before forming a grin of satisfaction. He raised the camera to his eye, only to find Sora smiling already. When asked about the cause of his smile, Sora simply replied nothing.
They were up until sunrise when the thought occurred to Sora once more. It was becoming more common, making its place in his head with no intention of leaving, yet it remained unacted upon. The pair lay sprawled about Prompto’s small couch, the television playing the menu screen of the movie they’d finished hours ago. Sora had a large, ostentatious room waiting for him at the hotel but he knew where he’d rather be. Fatigue caught up with him as their conversation came to a lull. He gave a noise of contentment as he felt kiss pressed to his hair and a quiet murmur of goodnight from the other. He was drifting off before he could conjure the thought of returning the sentiment.
Chocobos were involved when it finally happened, to the surprise of no one. Prompto had finally fulfilled his promise made so long ago Sora couldn’t remember the exact conversation, and had taken him to see chocobos in real life. He could only gasp upon finally seeing them; they weren’t native to his homeland and his excursions to this Kingdom rarely involved ranch visits. Prompto stood beside him with a matching grin, evidently delighted that his enthusiasm for the animals was being rivalled.
Sora turned to him and pushed himself up onto his toes. He had only enough time to register Prompto’s eyes widen in surprise before he pressed his lips to the blonde’s, his kiss sweet yet short. His grin returned once again as he settled back down and turned to the chocobos, gesturing for Prompto to follow him as he rushed over to pet them. Prompto didn’t take long to join him.
