A Very Simple Mercury Road Opener For Mercury Day

Mercury entered its home sign of Gemini at 3:00 this morning (EDT) so a quick little spell today would be a sweet little road opener:

1 yellow or orange candle (if you use color magic, do what you want obvs)

olive oil

powdered lemongrass, vervain, or chickory

coffee or chickory coffee as an offering

Make a cup of coffee and offer it to Mercury in a way that is consistent with your practice

carve the astrological symbol for Mercury or the symbol for the intelligence of Mercury onto your candle

Anoint with a small amount of olive oil and roll the candle in the powdered herbs (alternatively, place your herbs around the candle) - remember fire safety here! small amounts and very finely powdered is best if they are going on your candle

Invite Mercury into your space and speak aloud (yes, this is important here - Mercury rules speech) your desire to have a clear path in front of you

Light your candle and perform your magic as you would for your practice.

This practice can be done any time that Mercury stations (either forward or retrograde) or when Mercury enters a new sign, but is especially effective when Mercury enters its home signs of Gemini and Virgo, when Mercury enters YOUR Mercury sign, or when Mercury enters a new sign on a Wednesday.

The hour of Mercury will enhance this spell. So will the Orphic Hymn of Mercury. You could also further enhance this spell by burning the candle over the magic square for Mercury if you so wish.

Mercuralia

Traditionally held on May 15th, Mercuralia was an ancient Roman festival devoted to Mercury. Roman merchants would sprinkle their heads, their ships and merchandise, and their businesses with water taken from the well at Porta Capena.

Work with Mercury

As we don't all have access to the well at Porta Capena, I celebrate Mercury by using water charged with Mercurial energy in my bathing, cooking and in any spell work related to travel, commerce or communication. Other ways you can work with Mercury include:

Ask Mercury to spread confusion and disinformation amongst your enemies (but make sure you make an offering as a thank you!)

Tap into Mercury energy to manipulate someone - the gift of communication can be beneficial or malicious depending on how you wield it. As with any other time you ask Mercury for assistance, it is best to leave an offering.

Ask the universe questions using your divination tool of choice - Mercury was associated with divination and tends to smile upon those who practice this skill.

How to charge water with Mercurial Energy

Mercury is already associated with Water, and as such water absorbs Mercury's energy with ease.

Must be completed on Wednesday during Mercury's hours - the ideal time to attract Mercurial energy. If Mercury is in retrograde, don't forget the energy can be more chaotic and unruly than when Mercury is direct.

Fill a container with water (make sure its safe to drink if you plan to do so!)

Light an orange candle and place it on or very close to the container. If you do not have orange candles, white will do just fine. I like to carve Mercury's symbol into them regardless of colour. In addition to the candle, any orange you wear will attract Mercury's energy regardless of the time of day.

Close your eyes and meditate and reflect on Mercury and its power. Take as much time as feels right. Try to stay within the hour of Mercury though or you may attract different energy.

Thank the universe for the energy it has loaned you, then extinguish the candle.

No Roads Can Be Open

Witch Tip: Sometimes your spell failures have nothing to do with you. Something you cast the spell perfectly and did nothing wrong. Sometimes there is something - beyond you - standing in your way.

It can be hard to tell the difference - especially if you are new and haven't practiced a ton of Discernment.

So, I will give you a very obvious example. How it happened. How it appeared.

In February of 2020 (oh...do you already see where this is going?!?), I cast the same spell for the upcoming Mercury retrograde cycle that I had cast for the 3 or maybe 4 Mercury retrogrades prior. I'd been working with Mercury, specifically, for about a year as the Master of Roads. It's not that the roads close when Mercury is retrograde, it's that he walks backward - he follows the widdershins path - or, said another way, he follows the low road - said another another way, he walks through the underworld.

But sometimes you've got stuff that still needs to get done. Mercury had instructed me that, in this case, I could create an altar in his honor and burn a candle through his retrograde cycle to keep specific roads open. As I said, I performed this ritual 3 or 4 times prior to February of 2020 with little to no resistance. It is one of the most effective spells that I've performed to date and I still do this ritual when I need to.

So we come around to February 2020. I perform this ritual exactly as Mercury and I have agreed upon in the same exact manner as I had before. And the candle won't burn. It floods itself and goes out and I need to dig out the wick. Over and over again. But this is a spell in which I expect there to be blockages, so I keep trying. But nothing works. The candle completely stalls out to the point that I cannot light it again.

At the time, I was so frustrated and confused. I tried divining on what was wrong and got the most peculiar message I've ever received in my entire life: no roads can be open.

There was a name on the wind, a word whispered, and yet, none of us believed it. It couldn't possibly happen to us.

It took me a full month to connect with what Mercury had told me. I remember the day - it was three days into total lockdown and my partner had been temporarily laid off as a non-essential worker. He was listless and worried about how we would pay our bills and I was going stir crazy imagining having to exist in a house with him 24/7 (I like a lot of personal space). I went into my bathroom and cut off all of my hair - something like 10" or more. I need to do something.

As I gathered my lost locks to throw away, a tiny voice echoed in my head. No roads can be open. That is the day that I knew that it would not be two weeks. My god of roads made it clear that my life would be changed for at least a year - perhaps longer.

Sometimes a spell fails because of something is beyond yourself. And sometimes you should thank the gods for the cryptic message that won't make sense to you for more than a month.

For the past number of years, I had been doing Mercury retrograde work to keep my words strong during the retrograde cycle and I haven't this year because I received guidance from Mercury (and a few other sources) to try something new. And what I've been doing now is working out really well for me but I have lost my words a lot more so it's evident that my communication magic worked very well and now I miss it.
