Some sapphic couples comp, take 2:
Best non-canon Disney couple round 2: Mei x Miriam vs Baloo x Bagheera
Mei x Miriam
Baloo x Bagheera
Mei x Miriam: "They sing romantic pop songs to eachother. Miriam is Meilins biggest supporter, she loves Meilin in all her weirdness. Meilins mother does not approve of Miriam, (just like her mother (Meilins grandmother) did not approve of her husband who also supports and loves her inner panda), and the story is all about breaking circles and Miriam and Meilin walk into the happy end arm in arm."
Baloo x Bagheera: "Opposites attract. The bonding of having to care for a child together. Walking off into the sunset arm in arm. This dialoge: "You would not marry a panther, would you?" Baloo smiling: "I don't know." Baloo pokes Bagheera friendly with his elbow: "Come to think of it, no panther ever asked me!”"
"They're opposites attracting gay dads, you can never convince me otherwise"

🌈 more turning red fanart! the fact Miriam sang lullabies to Mei’s tamagotchi was so cute to me - I thought their relationship was so sweet 💕
Something I never really realized about why people are scared of fandoms "dying" is that if you go back while it's still dead all that plethora of fanwork that you enjoyed when it was alive is just...not there anymore. Not even that there's no new stuff, the old stuff is gone. Like I've gotten back on the Turning Red hype train but I'm the only one and I checked twitter and there's literally 0 results for the Meiriam tag. Like huh??? Did no one post abt them or did they all get deleted or what? Is the Twitter search bar just ass and only shows recent posts or smthn?
okokok i know i like to turn everything gay with my queer little hands, but there's something to be said about Ming's disapproval of Miriam and how it reflects Grandma's disapproval of Jin.
Yes, obviously the core takeaway of Ming so casually and carelessly calling Miriam "odd" in front of her own daughter, is how Meilin flinches and instantly takes her mother's judgment as truthful (otherwise, why would she say it, right?). Which is a ridiculously well-animated moment of how a little off-hand remark like that from our parental figures will lock into our brain for years to come. (also, how many times have your parents said something like "that girl is...odd..." and you instantly clocked it as "right. gay. queer. don't be like that. got it". whoof).
However, from a broader narrative perspective it shows that both Jin and Miriam are actively encouraging to embrace the "panda within". Jin saw that kaiju of Ming's panda form and still embraced her, "messy" parts included, Grandma's disapproval be damned.
Miriam is absolutely thrilled by Mei being more open about who she is, letting go off the perfect girl facade she keeps up for her mother, even telling Mei she's proud of her. Like, this girl has seen Mei's "messy" side and just adores it!!
Consciously or unconsciously, Pixar paralleled Jin's and Ming's love to the love between Miriam and Mei (in whatever shape or form it may take after the movie ends).
All I'm saying is: for a movie that so heavily relies on generational trauma (and therefore constantly parallels Mei's and Ming's experiences), this tiny parallel didn't even remotely feel like subtext, that shit felt like text.
