What's the story behind the "Mercury" Dime?

Spoiler: It’s not Mercury. That’s the coolest misnomer in coin collecting.

This iconic dime (minted 1916-1945) features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom and liberty since Roman times. The wings on the cap were meant to symbolize “liberty of thought.”

But why “Mercury”? The public saw the winged cap and immediately thought of the Roman god Mercury, the messenger. The name stuck forever. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman (yes, the Walking Liberty guy!), it’s a masterpiece of detail and one of the most beloved US coin designs.

Although this coin is commonly called the “Mercury Dime”, it is in fact the Winged Liberty Head Dime and the figure on the obverse is a representation of Liberty. Shop!
