❛❛  yeah,  i  know  it’s  kind  of  ironic  coming  from  the  girl  that  got  married  at  sixteen  to  her  first  ever  boyfriend  but,  i’m  not  sure  it  works  out  that  way,   brooke.   fairytales  are  just  that   —   fantasies,   daydreams  society  feeds  women  since  they’re  little  girls  to  make  them  feel  special  and  believe  love  conquers  all  and  anything  is  possible.   in  my  experience,  relationships  are  a  lot  more  complicated  than  that.   ❜❜   tutor  wife  was  aware  of  just  how  cynical  and  bitter  she  sounded,   but  everything  that’d  been  happening  with  chris  and  nathan’s  parents  and  taylor  was  starting  to  feel  like  a  little  too  much  to  handle,   specially  as  it  only  seemed  like  the  storm  threatening  to  tear  her  marriage  apart  had  only  just  begun    —    so  much  for  happy  endings,  huh?   however,   that  didn’t  mean  it  was  right  to  take  her  frustration  out  on  brooke  (  @mercyforged​  ),   and  haley  took  two  spoons  and  a  spint  of  butter  pecan  ice  cream  as  peace  offerings  and  brought  them  to  the  couch,   ❛❛  i’m  sorry,  i  didn’t  mean  to  rain  on  your  parade,   guess  it’s  just  been  a  frustrating  couple  weeks  with  getting  enough  money  for  rent  and  hurricane  taylor  visiting.   but  do  tell,  who’s  got  you  feeling  so  hopelessly  romantic  on  this  fine  thursday  morning?   is  it  felix,   ‘cause  now  that  would  be  a  jaw-dropper.  ❜❜

𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐀𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐕𝐀𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐔.

note:      this  is  not  my  normal  canon  divergence  for  matthias      (which  is  simply  a  survival  au),      however  it  is  an  au  i  would  love  to  incorporate  more  on  this  blog.  any  mentions  to  nina  are  exclusive  to  @mercyforged​​  in  this  au  only.  

nina  takes  matthias’  body  with  her  in  fjerda,  trying  to  find  a  proper  burial  site  but  not  being  able  to  find  anything.      (not  being  able  to  let  him  go).      while  there,  she  has  an  encounter  with  his  isenulf  companion,  trassel.  the  isenulf  are  said  to  be  children  of  djel,  making  them  resistant  to  heartrender  power.  but  nina  finds  they  are  more  connected  to  grisha  than  anyone  realizes;      when  she  touches  trassel,  she  feels  the  wolf’s  energy.  he  is  a  living  amplifier.  the  reason  the  wolves  were  so  skilled  at  training  and  fighting  grisha  was  an  innate  connection  to  them  in  the  first  place.      (like  calls  to  like).      out  of  pure  instinct,  trassel  bites  nina,  very  similarly  to  how  he  bit  matthias  back  when  he  chose  the  wolf  as  a  young  druskelle.  in  this  attack,  one  of  his  teeth  comes  loose  —  nina  feels  the  power  in  it,  and  uses  her  new  powers  as  a  corpse  witch  to  shape  it  into  her  own  amplifier.  the  resulting  arm  band  rests  over  the  bite  mark,  further  connecting  her  to  trassel.  

it’s  then  nina  realizes  something  else.  with  amplified  power,  she  could  do  what  she’d  tried  back  in  ketterdam  holding  matthias’  freshly  dead  body.  he  would  have  come  back  wrong.  now?  he  would  come  back  whole.  trassel  becomes  bonded  to  nina  similarly  to  how  he  was  bonded  to  matthias,  and  it’s  this  trio  of  bonds  that  makes  the  process  possible  in  the  first  place.  it’s  risky  but  she  has  to  do  it.  after  working  tirelessly,  she  comes  to  the  last  part;      his  heart.  it’s  said  that  when  heartrenders  care  for  each  other,  spend  their  lives  together,  their  heartbeats  become  one,  though  one  can  still  determine  there  are  two  people  in  the  room.  nina  is  familiar  with  this,  after  living  with  fedyor  and  ivan  for  half  her  life.  what  happens  with  matthias’  heart  is  similar,  but  with  her  own  heartbeat  pounding  in  her  ears,  his  heart  is  directly  connected  to  hers.  his  life  force  is  tied  to  her,  and  no  one  would  be  able  to  distinguish  the  two  hearts,  as  he  was  made  for  her  now  once  more.  

it  takes  awhile  for  matthias  to  recover  fully,  because  his  body  had  been  atrophied  for  so  long.  but  once  he  is  recovered,  it’s  impossible  to  tell  that  he  was  once  dead,  except  for  the  scar  on  his  chest  where  the  bullet  had  struck  him.  that  is,  until  he  moves  away  from  nina.  when  he  is  too  far  from  her      (and  her  heart),      he  begins  to  decay  once  more.  it’s  not  as  visible  to  most,  because  a  sickly  green  color  to  his  skin  could  just  be  nausea,  but  he’s  extremely  aware  of  what  it  means.  he  doesn’t  stray  too  far  after  that.  it  happens  during  nina’s  worst  days  too,  while  she  recovers  from  parem  addiction.  but  there’s  nowhere  he’d  rather  be.  

matthias  helps  nina  complete  her  mission  in  fjerda,  before  returning  to  ravka  with  her  for  zoya’s  coronation.  but  after  that,  the  two  of  them  are  free  to  go  wherever  they’d  like;      and  home  is  in  ketterdam,  with  the  crows.  alongside  trassel,  who  is  also  inseparable  from  the  pair,  matthias  finds  himself  settling  into  a  life  he  should  have  always  seen  as  possible  but  never  could  until  nina  saved  his  life.

     𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐘 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒 knock against the inside of his skull, demanding to be heard. names come and go like they are meant to mean nothing.   if they did truly mean nothing, he wouldn’t be stuck on them, and his own name wouldn’t be part of the indistinguishable mess.   faces are even harder to place.   IF THEY ARE IN HIS HEAD, THEY HAVE TO MEAN SOMETHING.   but what’s most present is the knife in his belt — it’s currently clean, but he can practically taste the iron of past kills’ blood. and the look on alina starkov’s face when he’d had it against her neck, both terror and naivety. SHE’S JUST A KID.   (with horror:   I AM TOO).   he can’t report back to the fjerdans yet, not when the mission isn’t finished, not when someone else could come to finish what he should have.

     𝐈𝐓 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃𝐍’𝐓 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄 him that he’s getting sloppy — he’s been watching over the sun saint   (not that he could call himself a guardian of any sort),  and she spots him, eyes wide with recognition. immediately his arms are held in surrender.   he considers kneeling and begging for forgiveness.   /   HE’LL NEVER KNEEL AGAIN.   what comes next confuses him even more.   “i’m sorry.”   ravkan feels foreign on his tongue. isn’t it supposed to be his native language? he blinks, shaking his head.   “i’m not here to hurt you. i — i need answers. and i can’t go back, not while you’re alive.”

     𝐈𝐓’𝐒 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐃𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆, the water rising around him and the cold, sick feeling that accompanies it. kaz finds himself more angry than panicked this time though — it’s been weeks and still he can’t hold back the nausea, backing away from nina like a wounded animal. it had barely been a minute, and she’d had the gloves on. and he wants to say:   this isn’t working.   there’s no point.   THIS ISN’T THE KIND OF THING YOU FIX.   but nina’s too stubborn to let this go now that they’ve started.   (there’s a part of him unwilling to give up either, despite his hands shaking, clenched into tight fists).   unable to even look at her as she speaks, the thief lets out a frustrated noise, letting his head fall back against the wall behind him.   “you forget i am known for my LACK OF PATIENCE.”   saints, how he tries to make the words sound bitter, but he thinks it only sounds broken.   FOCUS ON MY VOICE.   /    just breathe kaz, it’s alright.   he doesn’t know how nina managed this kindness, but with gritted teeth, he forces himself to look back to her.

     “𝐈𝐓 𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒𝐍’𝐓 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋 like anything’s changed, nina.”   a lie;   he’s sitting here with his gloves off in front of her, and even if he’d balked, it was more than he could have handled before.   (more than he ever thought he’d be able to manage).   cold eyes focus on the heartrender, and he shakes his head. there’s some truth he’s already accepted too. UNTIL HE TALKS ABOUT JORDIE, they’re always going to feel like they’re running into a brick wall.   “and i wouldn’t want to waste your time.”   there’s the reaction, screaming to push her away. everything would be so much easier if there weren’t people who insisted on caring.   (WHAT A SAD THOUGHT THAT IS, KAZ).   he blinks, forcing the voice down.   “now stop looking at me like that.”   with hope, with optimism, things he knows get you killed.
