ya know, the simple fact of the matter is…
if there were actual, legitimate reasons that Bob was (physically or otherwise) unable to be included in the promotional material for this season, there were SO MANY ways to let us know that are STUPIDLY EASY.
it could be something as simple as J. Roth or the network saying he was absent for "health reasons" or "personal reasons" or was "working on another project." there are legal and PR people being PAID to do exactly that for both the series AND the network. it is their literal job to come up with ambiguous-yet-reassuring informative statements to give the public regarding these EXACT types of situations. i mean honestly, the damn social media interns could do it in the time it took them to take a bathroom break.
and even if Bob was the one who refused to be in the promo material, he ALSO has people who could handle that shit for him. but i gotta say, i highly doubt that was the case. mainly based on the fact that entertainment industry contracts almost always have something called a 'Promotional Services' clause in them that is really broad and basically allows networks to require actors to render unlimited publicity services for the duration of their employment. if and actor is going to breach or try to get out of the duties agreed upon in the contract, it has to be a little better of a reason than "I don't wanna." as the party looking to invalidate the contract, the actor would have to meet the legal burden of proving just cause. and even if they CAN provide some kind of just cause, they can still be sued by the network and their employers for millions of dollars.
while you can get out these contractual duties based on prior contractual duties not yet performed, that wouldn't even apply here, because the duty to preform the agreed upon obligations are based on seniority. i highly doubt that anything Bob would be working on right now would have seniority over a show that he has been a main character (as well as an occasional director) on since 2014. and yeah, there are accommodations made (mostly within the contracts themselves) that take into account the value of the duty (i.e. promos/cons/photo ops vs. acting/directing ect.) and the amount of time it would take the actor away from their subsequent project. but even if Bob were currently cast to star a in huge blockbuster or some shit, it would have been so easy to accommodate that. (for eg. the countdown pictures can be taken at any time during filming OR the hiatus and couldn't possibly take more than a day).
yeah, there has been speculation about there being a "special reason" and that this is a "promotional tool" or whatever. but it is SO. EASY. to make promotional material with out giving away a "secret" or a "twist,” shows and movies do it ALL. THE. TIME. if they didn't or couldn't, there would literally be no such things as mystery crime shows and movies. this just goes so much against industry custom standards and practices, and there has been literally zero explanation, or even information, offered about it at all. Bob is a popular actor in the series playing the (also popular) male lead character on the show. if they didn't expect at least some uproar, or even just questions, about his absence or inferred exclusion, then they are in the wrong industry tbh. and if they try to claim they didn't foresee it, i would have no qualms with saying they are probably being intentionally insincere and purposefully obtuse.
so this is either incredibly weird and unprofessional at best or deliberately spiteful and malicious at worst…
and either way its definitely some fucking nonsense.
