03.06.19 Ecstatic Music Festival presented the 2019 edition of the Bang On A Can People’s Commissioning Fund concert at Merkin Hall. The Bang On A Can Allstars, with guest cellist Mariel Roberts, performed newly commissioned pieces by Henry Threadgill, Josue Collado Fregoso, Trevor Weston and a great piece by Nicole Lizee which incorporated film she made. The second half of the program was dedicate to pieces that used alternate tunings, starting  with "Movement Within” by Glenn Branca on instruments he had created or modified. This was followed by a stunning piece by Annie Gosfield with dizzying keyboard work by Vicky Chow, and the vintage piece Escalator by Arnold Dreyblatt.

02.15.18 Ecstatic Festival presented the Bang On A Can Peoples Commissioning Fund concert at Merkin Hall, featuring terrific new commissions by George Lewis and Angelica Negron performed by the Bang On A Can All Stars, as well as older works by Pamela Z, Lukas Ligeti and Thurston Moore.

01.09.17 Bang On A Can has turned thirty years old and they kicked off the year with the Peoples Commissioning Fund concert, presenting newly commissioned works incorporating field recordings by Anna Thurvoldsdottir, Nico Muhly and Juan Felipe Waller as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Hall. They also presented a piece each by the BOAC founders Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon and a stunner by David Lang. The evening ended with two pieces by Phillip Glass, including an excerpt from Einstein On The Beach sung by Eliza Bagg.

Opera star Briana Hunter pays tribute to African legacy in Julian De La Chica’s new song cycle: Dispersed and Transcendental Chants, Op. 18.

On December 6, American opera singer Briana Hunter (“…a mezzo-soprano of astounding vocal and dramatic range.” — Jennifer Goltz, Opera News) will perform at Merkin Hall in New York City, accompanied by pianist Eric Sedgwick. The program includes the world premiere of the song cycle “Dispersed and Transcendental Chants, Op. 18”, commissioned by Hunter especially for the occasion and composed by minimalist Julián De La Chica and a selection of works by Chausson, Price, Moore, Adams, Gordon, Arlen and Sondheim. The recital is part of the Tuesday Matinees cycle and is presented by the KAUFMAN MUSIC CENTER.

When Gaby Moreno's Nonesuch debut album, ¡Spangled!, a collaboration with Van Dyke Parks, was released late last year, she marked the occasion with a concert at Kaufman Music Center's Merkin Hall in NYC as part of the Ecstatic Music series. She was joined by Metropolis Ensemble and LADAMA to perform the album. You can now watch seven songs from the concert here.

Ian Hobson - "Preludes, Études, Variations," Concert 1 of 6: Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Stephen Taylor

Ian Hobson‘s last appearance in New York was an ambitious Brahms cycle in September-October 2013. Extending over six weeks, it offered a comprehensive survey of Brahms’ solo music for piano and his chamber music for piano. I praised this enthusiastically at the time not only for the intelligence and sensitivity of the playing, but for the thoughtful programming, and the outstanding program book, with extensive essays by Paul Griffiths, O.B.E. Just last week, Ian Hobson began an equally ambitious series of six recitals, even more impressively organized, on a more abstract concept, bearing the title “Preludes, Études, Variations,” continuing monthly into April 2016, with this first concert, here reviewed, at Subculture, NYC, as well as the next on December 1. The rest will continue at Merkin Hall on the Upper West Side. This series is entirely solo, accompanied only by Mr. Griffiths’ incisive notes. In addition to 19th- and 20th-century classics of these three musical genres, there are world premieres of new works commissioned by Hobson for the series.
