Cooper (8yo White Mountain gelding, also gelded in November and out of holding may 29) wearing his first fly mask and finally showing some interest in me when we’re not in a formal training session

Hazel (9yo Devil’s Garden mare, gathered in 2023 and sort of flunked out of another program in NC and showed up here fairly severely head shy) on her first walk out of the pen & paddock complex

Amélie (8yo High Rock mare, out of holding April 12) chilling out and turning into a real domestic pony (she can wear a fly sheet now for her Bug Allergies)

Tally (4yo Twin Peaks mare, out of holding may 29) also going for her first walk beyond the pens and looking like a baked bean while doing so

Cooper and Hazel in particular would probably be considered “difficult” cases by a lot of people in the mustang community, including some professionals I will not name; but one of the side effects of having cut my teeth on Devil’s Garden horses—especially older ones—is that I’m not really phased by the particular demands of a mustang more set in their ways and/or with more entrenched avoidance behaviors. Is this a hyperspecific vague? Perhaps. Every day I get closer to writing multiple mustang books.
