Having a moment over the Merlin finale (as is to be expected), and the thing that really sticks in my head is when Arthur asks Merlin why he's still "acting like a servant," and Merlin goes on about destiny for a bit before admitting "because you're my friend and I don't want you to die." Arthur has trouble comprehending that his only friend would want to take care of him, because on some level he's always been aware that everyone only cares about him because he's royalty. Merlin was his servant from the start, and though he dotes on Arthur constantly it's still (by some metric) just him doing his job.

It's difficult for Arthur to process Merlin having magic, but it's even more difficult for him to process that Merlin is still the same as he ever was. Merlin was always an all-powerful sorcerer, and he always chose to act like a servant because he loved Arthur and wanted to express it through acts of service (such as washing his socks and striking his enemies with lightning). In this scene, Arthur is forced to reckon with the fact that Merlin genuinely never had to do any of those bullshit chores. It was never about Arthur's authority as king or Merlin's role as servant, it was just that they were friends and Merlin wanted to do stuff for him. For the first time in his life, Arthur sees somebody taking care of him and knows that it's 100% because they think he's worth it.
