Can you do a set of scripts for ordering alcohol at a bar/club? How do I get the attention of the bartender, what do i say to order when i have their attention, do i have to say different sort of things when ordering different types of drink? I'm from the UK if that makes a difference, but i'm assuming it's pretty much the same everywhere since the alcohol is the same. It's my 18th birthday in 4 days so I'll be of legal age and expected to buy something when I'm out. Thank you.
(sorry for the late response on this, and i hope your birthday went okay!)
i’m not of legal age in america to drink at a bar, but this is what The Internet tells me is the proper procedure in getting a drink there:
1) decide what you want before you approach the bar, or at least know what you want to ask about. have whatever you’re paying with ready and visible in your hands
2) approach the bar and either make eye contact and smile/nod to the bartender, or otherwise get the bartender’s attention. if you have a friend around they can do this part as well
3) ask for the drink:
you: hi, can i have a [whatever it is you want]?
bartender: sure.
and/or something like
you: what beers do you have on tap/draft? / do you carry local drinks? / can i also have some water with that?
4) the bartender will get you the drink, and then you can pay them. pay with cash, or a credit card if you want to start a tab.
tip: if you expect to drink for a few rounds, tip the bartender well the first time. they’ll remember this and take care of you during the night.
