The reader is in her hometown, nostalgia filling her lungs with the smell of sandy beaches and saltwater, the coarse sea caressing her skin as she goes in for a dip every other day. Somehow, she meets Merman Soap and is fascinated by the possibility of how a creature that she had only ever heard about in fairy tales now exists in the flesh (and scales) in front of her.
Just imagine the yearning. How the initial curiosity for each other turns into the incessant craving for each other, needing to touch and kiss and hold each other until they're one soul. The anguish Johnny has to deal with when he has to confront the mortality of his beloved - the fact that he will outlast her life and her love as a result. How this makes Soap all the more selfish, ultimately making him cling to you and every moment he shares with you - scared out of his mind that every meeting you have with him will be his last.
You, who has to realize that you love someone who's otherworldly. This world has no place for someone like him - they'd prod at him and pose him around like a trophy and poke at him for their entertainment until they've wrung him dry. How you try to break things off and ensure that he never has a reason left to set foot on land by breaking his heart into a million pieces and vowing to yourself to never set foot into this accursed town - for Johnny's sake.
Soap is heartbroken when he realizes you have abandoned him, and left him just like that. But he's convinced that you're it for him - you are all he wants and all he needs to spend the eternal life he has been blessed with. Thanks to some help he had acquired from some ancient creatures whose real names were smudged off and their titles forgotten by dead tongues, he finally takes his first steps on the land with his newly acquired human legs. He knows you're scared - for him and for yourself, but silly girl, do you not know how much he loves you now? Do you really underestimate how strong he is?
He'd convince you, he has to. He will show you, don't you worry. You humans and your fickle worries - there's nothing that can come between you both, he will make you realize that. And then he'd claim you all for himself, his hands twitching with the need to hold you and bite you and mark you all for himself. You're all his, whether you realize it or not.
And when he makes you realize that, Johnny will be able to finally bring you home.
