#MerMay 09: While it was once believed that #merfolk were exclusively of the half-sapien variety, we have since come to learn that there are many different net-species under the ocean, including mercats, meraffes, and the extraordinary merguin. - Known as the “Penguin Queen,” merguins aren’t actually related to penguins at all. In fact, little is known about the actual appearance or origin of the upper-body of this bizarre species of mermaid, since everything above its seven stomachs has the ability to change its appearance. It is believed that they are descended from octopus, though this theory has yet to be proven. - What is known is that this gargantuan beast can grow to be 120ft in length including its massive tentacles, that it typically travels alone, and that it is nearly at the top of the foodchain, second only to the illusion kraken. - How did the merguin get it’s name, you ask? Well, though merguin are typically solitary, as mentioned above, there have been multiple reports of merguin surfacing in Antarctica, disguised as penguins. In fact, the first recorded merguin fatality was a penguin poacher in that area of the world. It was once hypothesized that merguin would lure the penguins into the water and then devour them en masse, but it seems the opposite is true: the merguin will protect the penguins from predators while the feed. In exchange, it is believed the merguin gets some sort of social validation and comradery from the penguins, who have, by all appearances, accepted the merguins as one of their own on several occasions. However, more research will need to be done before any concrete conclusions can be drawn. — #mermaid #kraken #merpenguin #inker #lineart #linework #illustration #penguin #twitchcreative #twitchart #illustrator #artist #octopus #underwater #underthesea #comic #animator #conceptartist #conceptart #characterartist #characterart #tentacles #transformer #cameoflauge #creatureart #changeling #shapeshift #mikehulyk (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxZdUEpllMy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rlh7p9esuiig
