Why Facebook is acquiring WhatsApp for $16B

NEW YORK: Facebook has agreed to acquire messenger app WhatsApp for approximately $16 billion, including $4 billion in cash and approximately $12 billion worth of Facebook shares.

“I’m excited to announce that we’ve agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post published to Facebook.
