dear  hermione ,  

i  did  say  i’d  write  you  every  day ,  &  i  meant  that .  i’m  a  man  of  my  word ,  as  you  know  !   i’ve  only  just  gotten  back  to  the  flat  after  seeing  you  off  &  i’m  already  writing  you .  well ,  that’s  not  true .  i  mucked  about  with  the  shop  finances  for  a  little  while  before  giving  up ,  because  you’ve  always  been  better  at  that  stuff  than  me .  don’t  worry ,  fred  &  i’ll  figure  it  out  eventually .  it’s  just  always  so  much  better  when  you’re  here .  

another  shop’s  gone  dark ,  wiseacre’s  wizarding  equipment . or  maybe  they  just  closed  early  today  ?  i  hope  it’s  that .  it  looked  awfully  empty  when  i  looked  in  the  window  on  my  way  back  from  king’s  cross .  honestly ,  sometimes  i  feel  guilty  looking  at  how  well  our  shop  is  doing ...    i’m  pretty  sure  fred  &  i  got  this  lease  so  cheap  since  no  one  else  in  their  right  minds  would  open  a  business  right  now ,  ha .  lucky  that  we’re  not  really  in  our  right  minds  then . 

by  the  way  --  what  are  some  of  your  favourite  muggle  records  ?  i  think  i’ll  get  some  to  play  around  here  when  it’s  too  quiet .  not  that  you’re  loud  or  anything .  i  can’t  explain  it ,  but  even  when  you  were  just  reading  in  your  favourite  armchair  by  the  window ,  it  never  felt  quiet .  i  keep  looking  over  like  maybe  you’ll  still  be  there ,  like  the  sap  that  i  am .  

love  you ,  miss you ,  can’t  wait  to  see  you .  have  a  good  start  of  term .  try  not  to  do  anything  illegal  this  year .  but  if  you  do ,  let  me  know  because  i  want  in .

"Good because I am actually going to have to sneak into the potion's office. At least it's Slughorn this year and not Snape."

Hermione wanted to test one of the potions in a book from the library. It wasn't in the curriculum but...she was having to adjust to breaking the rules for Harry. She felt something in the air, that something was coming to change everything. So Hermione was testing potions of protection and healing. Anything to give Harry an edge. But, that required potion ingredient that neither one of them had.

"You would fine pleasure in this! We really need to get you a hobby, Harry!"

     Harry shrugged, looking only a little ashamed of himself - though it might have been fake. He was rather good at faking being abashed, having learned it at the knee of his aunt and uncle. If he wasn’t ashamed enough of his own actions, he was punished worse for it. “Oi, if you don’t want me to help, I don’t have to.” Harry raised a brow at her. “But it’s breaking a lot of rules, isn’t it? Slughorn might just let me take it if I asked. He likes me.” For what reason, he didn’t know yet. Other than Dumbledore wanting it to be so. “What do you need, anyway?”

“i know,” he says, “i agree. but—” of course there’s a but, there’s ALWAYS a but. “i really, really do want to spend the holiday with you all. it was so nice of you guys to invite me, and i...” he picks at a loose thread on his sweater sleeve nervously. “it’s been really lonely at home, with just me and my dad. which is — hard, you know? but i know if i’m with you, then my dad will be spending christmas alone, && that’s just..... sad. i don’t know. what would you do?”

"You're going to break another quill if you keep holding it that tightly and I may be rich 'Mione, but I can only order so many of them to replace the ones you keep breaking." Using a towel, Eris squeezed some more water from her hair as she walked over to see what homework Hermione was working on ( and to double check it wasn't from a shared class that Eris had forgotten to do ).

"Did Ron piss you off again? Cause I really can kick his ass if you need me too, I may be five-two but I have a hell of a right hook."

Hermione let out a short sigh, tearing her gaze from her book for a moment. She didn't particular care for the opinions of Slytherins and Pansy Parkinson was one of the few who continued to try and antagonize her. For what reason? Hermione really didn't know but it was enough that she was used to it. Should she be used to it or should she be using some of that Gryffindor bravery to fight back against it?

"I don't know, Parkinson. Are all Slytherins as pretentious as you as well?" She questioned, gesturing to be left alone. "I'm reading, I really don't see how the act could be bothering to you."

     “No. Some of us don’t have a reason to be.” She shot back easily, not giving a damn that Hermione meant it as an insult. If pretentious was the best the book worm could do, then she wasn’t as smart as she tried so hard to be. “Big word, pretentious. Did you learn that at your little mudblood school, Granger? I’m surprised any of the filthy muggles knew the definition at all.”

"Well you're rather kind, Astoria. I don't believe that many would have the same opinion as you." Many was code word for Rita Skeeter. Hermione had been cruel, choosing to only give Astoria Greengrass an interview after the war, not even looking in Rita Skeeter's direction. Really, Hermione was still having trouble adjusting to a none war climate, why would she ruin her peace by speaking to that beetle of a woman?

Astoria was kind and her questions actually have depth, compared to whatever sensationalized question that Rita could come up with. They were having tea over the interview, and Hermione smiled as she poured honey into her cup.

"It should be noted that I think the same of you."

     Astoria refused to use a quick quotes quill. Absolutely refused. During their time at Hogwarts, she had seen (albeit from afar) how Rita Skeeter and her quick quotes had affected the lives of some of her fellow students. And she had found it utterly despicable. News wasn’t meant to be crafted just to be popular. It was meant to be raw at times, certainly. But never falsified. No. The basis of information should have been true. No eyes glittering with tears of regret unless there were tears of regret. No love stories unless there was something to tell. That was how she planned to hold herself… at least at the Daily Prophet. “Thank you.” Astoria said softly, brushing some hair behind her ear. “You know…” The dark haired girl put down her quill and notepad. “Off the record, and all that. I thought you were really brave, sticking by Potter and helping him like you did. If he’d been a Slytherin, I’m not certain he’d have found a friend as loyal. Things might not have turned out how they had if not for you.”

"Luna!"

Hermione's cheeks were tinted a faint red at the idea of people shagging in the Room they were currently in, practicing their defensive spells. Harry had paired the two of them together and Hermione really did wonder why. She liked Luna Lovegood, she did. But some of the things that the girl said did seem rather odd. Fiddling with her wand, Hermione took a quick look around the room.

"I'm sure...I'm sure some but that really isn't the point of a room like this! This is intricate magic!"

     “Hermione, you’re so sweet.” Luna said with a soft giggle, sending the spell they were practicing at the other girl. Not successfully. “I think that was probably exactly the point of a room like this. Think about it! Grown ups had to have made it. The Hogwarts Founders, you know?” She shot the spell again, this time grinning when it worked for her, even if her aim was way off. “So I think they probably wanted to shag in here. I don’t know that students were ever meant to find it at all.”

     The Professor looked down at the half-cake. Burned or not, he could smell the chocolate in the air, and a crooked grin came upon his face. It made him look younger. Far younger than he actually was, even. Which was a feat in and of itself when he often looked so ragged and defeated. “That’s a lovely thought, Miss Granger.” He responded. Remus knew that she already knew what he was, but the fact that she hadn’t seemed to have told anyone, and was now bringing him cake? Perhaps the girl trusted him, after all. That was more touching than the cake itself was. Though that hit close to home, as well. “You’ll have a piece with me, won’t you?” He would eat the whole thing. Happily.
