A Click And A Bang: My muse accidentally killing yours.
James didn’t bother to even question it, he just let his body hit the ground. He heard the spell collide with the building behind him and for a moment, his vision was blurred from the smoke and rubble.
It wasnt the first time he had been at the front line this week. This was the first time that the order had sent him out with Remus. Moody always sent them out without partners that might have personal relationships that might get in the way. He had a point, though it was still quiet frustrating. This was the first time in a long time that he’d been paired up with Remus. After going through everyone in the order, it was quite hard to find new partners without connections. James trail of thought diminished as another explosion happened far off in the distance. He could hear feint screaming and smoke immediately filled the sky. James turned and made eye contact with Remus and jerked with his head in that direction. Being this close to death eaters wouldnt accomplish anything but death, James knew that. After a stiff nod from Remus both men slowly got to there feet and ran.
Without blinking James set off several spells in the direction of the death eaters. A few flew right by his head but it didnt deter him. He ran as fast as he could and as soon as he heard Remus yelling, it was too late.
James turned his head away from the on coming curses and looked directly ahead and paled. In front of his was Voldemort. James immediately pulled his wand in front of him. He glanced behind him, praying for backup but he felt his heart sink as soon as he saw Remus was already occupied with two death eaters who seemed to have come out of nowhere.
"Ah, Potter." Voldemort sneered.
James forced himself to keep a neutral face. Displaying any type of anger would only make the situation worse and James knew himself well enough that he wouldnt be able to accomplish anything if he got upset. Fear was flooding through his veins and he could feel his legs wobble.
"What do you want?" James practically demanded.
He watched a flicker of emotion cross Voldemort’s face but it happened so fast that James didnt know what to think. He watched as a mocking smirk took over his lips. Voldemort glanced away from James for a second to glance down at his wand. James’ eyes followed for reasons he didnt know. He toyed with it for a second before swishing it out and hitting James with a curse in the knee. James yelped and fell to the ground. Tears of pain filled his eyes but he forced them to not show. As soon as James could he looked up. He could feel the blood pouring from his skin but he forced himself to keep his eyes on his opponent. James brought out his wand and pointed it directly at Voldemort. His hands shook slightly and he knew that even if he would manage to get out a spell, Voldemort was better. He would be killed instantly. It hurt him to consider it but James quickly tried to think of an escape.
James didnt answer. He kept his lips pressed together and his eyes glinted in rage. His knuckles had grown white from holding his wand so tightly. He wanted to turn around and see where Remus was. If he was safe, if he had escaped, but James knew he couldnt look. James shifted and felt his arm hit something hard in his pocket and hope filled his heart. He forgot about his emergency portkey. He took it with him on every mission and it seemed like now, he had a good reason to use it.
"Join me, Potter. Join me and you can have everything you want."
He made his voice sound like it was honestly a good idea. James wondered if he had some kind of magic involved with that tone. Without thinking James spat on the ground in front of Voldemort. James brought out his wand and pointed it directly at him and before anything could happen, James screamed "Avada Kedavra!" At the top of his lungs.
He watched in horror as Voldemort disappeared like smoke. James froze and he saw the person directly in back of him. Remus' wand was pointed, he must have been right about to help James escape. That's when James saw his green light hit Remus straight in the chest. The surprise was suddenly frozen onto his face.
James screamed and scrambled to reach him. Tears started flowing from his eyes. He screamed Remus' name over and over and by the time he reached his body, nothing came out but broken sobs. James draped his head over Remus' chest and no warmth was there to help cease his sobs.
