I think what’s usually left unsaid nor touched upon is how metal sonic is based on classic sonic who is a child: he’s basically a kid sonic made to be a killing machine and only have eggman as his influence/connection who generally mistreats him (thus it’s very insane that eggman, a grown ass man gets seen as having good in him meanwhile metal sonic who’s around teen age, gets hated and treated like shit just because he’s a robot)
I cant believe the 1 thing they kept from archie is the Robian Racism--
Metal is the ultimate rival to sonic and you can see this because all the tropes and ideas of shadow and jet are a hundred times more hype when it's metal instead

It would be a process that would take a whole game to do, but it is a Completely Possible, but Extremely Involved Narrative to take, given how Metal has slowly devolved into "Eggman's main henchman who just so happens to have a Sonic Complex"
I dont exactly know how it would they would go about it, given that its the redemption of fucking Metal Sonic, but a fun way Ive always thought of going about it is in a Sonic Heroes-adjacent game.
Maybe they remake Heroes and give it a side-narrative that is the main selling point (like SxS Gens), of metal sonic reminiscing on Heroes and going "wait a second I can be my own person" and the whole game is abt that [this game would be set way after in like, post-frontiers, so the writing dissonance between Heroes & This game would be funny]
A cool idea they could go with is making him a certified Eggman-Hater like Omega.
The way the redemption could go is that everyone is skeptical at first (I reiterate, this is METAL SONIC), thinking that he's trying to pull a fast one on them (see: everyone talking mad shit abt him in crossworlds for NOOO reason--)
But over the course of the game they realize that he genuinely means it and is goint against eggman's orders to help. Think of it as like "Shadow 05 if it was a game anybody GAF about" (cue the Shadow android scene but with Metal Sonic instead. Absolute cinema.)
Eggman has Sage now, so the removal of Metal Sonic from his team isnt that big of a loss as it used to be (as fucked up as it would be from Mets' side. My boys Going Through It, even in base canon.)
Basically all scenes abt his rebellion would parallel shadow, this is a subtle reference to the fact that IT SHOULDVE BEEN METAL IN SA2, DAMMIT--

Slight spoilers for Synchronicity (Metal Monarch AU fic Im working on) but here they are, and Non-Metal Aus if I have space (labelled with an asterisk):
- Metal Monarch - my first elaborated metal sonic au. Metal achieves his Neo Metal Overlord powers back through the help of Synergy/Subterfuge!x/2013x (more on him later)
Metal kills a buncha people in this Au but eventually goes to live in the Sonic Jam Rom Syn lives in. Him and Synergy are Very Close btw. X's time in the Metal Monarch Au was very prolonged compared to other places.
Theres also my friend @goldenphone-jpg (who cant use his phone rn)'s Oc, Jack Rabbit, and all three are Team Cyber.
- Rival Metal - See my previous post because it was already a good explanation. Metal sonic replaces shadow and gets go be cool, quippy and violent.
- Insane Metal - Meta Snaps and kills people, basically. While Monarch leans more into the Sane parts of Metal, Insane Metal just becomes a killing machine.
- CD Zone - technically a Fan Zone concept for the Zone stuff they had in Archie Sonic. Everyone in this Zone is based on a Zone from Classic sonic, Palette and power-wise (Sinker/Zonehog is Labyrinth Zone, Scrapper/Zonebot is Lab act 4 (the purple one from that other zone), Hook/Zonefox is Marble Garden (Marble Fox joke), Line/Zonechidna is Angel Island (on fire).)
Shadow is a villain in this one because I hate shadow /silly
- Stardust Metal - created right now because I imagined Metal Sonic with the aesthetics of Stardust Speedway and Im obsessed. Not much else but my love for metal rn. And sometimes? Thats all you need
- Metal Council - a get-together for all of the robot versions of Sonic (+ a few non-sonic guests who are mostly +1s n 2s for the Sonics)
NON-METAL AUS:
- * SonicROM - we finally get to talk about Synergy. Synergy (or Subterfuge!x / 2013x, or Sensor, or Syntax, or Extra Life Virus, or Bruiser, or Copywarez... you get the point) is an EXE who takes over a copy of Sonic Jam. In the game he replaces sonic and acts as a sort of friendly guide/gamemaster, while in canon's real life (this takes place in the same universe as MarioPSA but none of you on my main know what that is) he is an Eldritch Code Virus who is basically being begged to for help because they think he's benevolent
... anyways he is not. He is mostly sadistic, but keeps a whimsical side about him, torturing people with a little zest about him. His name is 2013x because I like it. He likes Metal Sonics. You arw speaking to him/me right now (headmate)
Synergy has many forms with many names, but his main powers are copying (like neo metal), illusions & debug mode stuff (shields, super/hyper boxes, Extra Life, etc....) + Blood/Bone/Musclekinesis, Chaos/Phantom/Sol Energy and Vine/thorn/plant powers. Cuz the Cool Factor is Insane. Hes literally a Sonic.exe dont be surprised hes op.
He has little minions that kinda look like sonic characters and they are (1 for Followers, 1 for Subterfugeified) called Metal Synonym (Subterfuge!Metal_Sonic) and Metal Follower (Follower!Metal_Sonic)
The Subterfuges are more cute and cuddly (to keep the aesthetic) while the Followers are more like the standard demonized exe victimes
(Subterfuge!x has a counterpart called Pellucid!z / blaze.zip btw.)
- * Unnamed Gore_hog Au - She's a very gorey exe who kills people in brutal ways. Inspired by Sonic.omt, she lives in SonicROM with 2013x (& Monarch)
- * LOVELETTER.AMY - Amy is short for Amour in this. Amour has a body covered in thorns and roses. She follows 2013x around sometimes.
- * Electric Scourge - this is my take on Surge, by making it so that she is actually a transfem/bigender butch lesbian Scourge trying to live in the down-low. Scourge/Fiona is a thing in this. Idk who kit is yet, idek if hes IN this.
- * Mecha Sally - Will work on a fic about this called Damnatio Memoriae. Hopefully I spelled that right. Anyways this Sally gets transported from Archie to normal IDW Still as a robot.
That was a thing before Archie was cut short, and I liked the tragedy of Sally waking up in a world that didnt recognize her anymore, with no means to de-roboticize her (mobian roboticozation has never been big enough a problem to warrant a cure in Games/IDW)
- Theres a possible Exesha & Exterior (NU inspired) au but its just a thought rn.

I was gonna say something about Metal probably loathing Shadow for getting to have what he doesn't despite being so alike in some ways(like how in neo metal sonic form he kinda copies shadow's hair streaks or how his one note appearance in the shadow game he's calling him a fake hedgehog. He may be made to be the better sonic but the shadow hatred is all his own lol)
But actually the team up idea is funnier, team "we're beating sonic (up)" comprised by the most dangerous robotnik creation and the ultimate lifeform (and ocationally a very confused Jet, when it's necessary for the team minimum)
The thought of all of sonic's rival/doppelgängers teaming up to jump him is very funny.
He has a LOT of rivals by the way He is NOT winning that. This is what Sonic Rivals shouldve been.
We'll call them Team Rivals. And It'll be Wonderful.

i remembering watching a video where a guy on archie vs idw which he is like "in archie, they'll show you the map of the world and characters actually talk about distances with naming the specific locations in said world, but in idw, the only map we have so far is made by a young girl (cream) that's obviously meant to be inaccurate because idw is not allowed to show the specifics of the world due to being connected to game canon" and he's so right like where the fuck are the places of idw are even located at?? goes to how being connected to canon really hampers on idw because they're not even allowed to show where the places are located in specific parts of sonic world at all
