Toki headcanon

I was thinking, especially hard after seeing a post about Dethklok IQ charts, that Toki is not intellectually imparied as much as people seem to love to paint him.

For reference, I'm a pedagogy and language teaching major so stuff like mental disorders, learning disabilities and intellectual impairments are a part of my degree. Also, my master's thesis was an interpretative study of media so don't mind me doing some close reading. 😅

In the show, Toki actually shows that he's capable of basic logical thinking (he understands that "yous gots to spell rights to be a speller, for example) and shows a rather strange "eloquence" from time to time. He's also capable of grasping abstraction (when you tell him something he can't physically see/hear, he's able to understand what you're talking about). He understands language and please, he can communicate in two languages with a decent level of intelligibility. The post which proposed Toki's IQ being 50 is just wrong. People with such severe intellectual impairments (I am NOT going to use the r-word) struggle to communicate consistently in their first language and often are not required to learn a second language at all or only at a very basic level. The fact his English is off is not a sign of him having low IQ.

He's also capable of performing day-to-day tasks (and by this, I mean dressing up, eating, performing personal hygiene) without greater issue. People with as severe intellectual challenges as 50 IQ is need to be specifically taught this. (Here, I want to put a personal note that I have a very strong belief that inclusion is a key concept in education and education of mentally impaired individuals is paramount in a healthy developed society.)

What I think is the reason he's unable to connect the dots of social interaction, his naivety and the very specific way of his cognitive processes is the fact that he was severely deprived during his FORMATIVE years. It's normal for abused children to mature completely at an older age, if at all. But he was deprived on all levels, from biological needs to social needs (just take the whole Maslow pyramid of needs and treat it as a checklist) which led to his cognitive development being slower.

The way he was isolated from other people, also at the age when kids are developing at a fast pace, pretty much day-to-day, affected his social and cognitive development immensely. Apart from the "obvious" obstacles on his life journey such as trauma and psychopathological variables which always affect an individual's knowledge/competence acquisition on a baseline level, Toki's silliness stems from elsewhere.

I will give some personal experience from my work with individuals with specific learning disabilities. It happens that a kid is diagnosed with intellectual impairment while they're from an abusive family and therefore deprived of basic cognitive stimuli/socialization. And once they're placed into a functional foster care or an institutional care, they suddenly bloom. Start communicating, reading, talking, counting, exploring the world around them and understanding it. They do not usually become A+ students but the growth is explosive and insane. It's beautiful to watch from a teacher's perspective.

I'm not a licensed pedagogical psychologist, no, but I have a solid basis on this as inclusive education is a very important and much needed principle in modern pedagogy. HOWEVER! If I was to guess Toki's state, I'd say:

- CAN (Child Abuse and Neglect Syndrome)

- ADD (maybe ADHD but I'm not sure about hyperactivity specifically and everyone in Dethklok has attention issues fr)

- dyslexia, a.k.a dyslekskia

I think the key take out from this rant is: Toki is not intellectually broken, he's CATCHING UP on what he was deprived of as a kid during the key years of his development.
