Nameneko Matakichi's Strongest Legend: Don't Mess With Me! - Short Story
Matakichi takes on troublemakers from Destroy Academy.
I was going to translate chapter 5 of Pokémon Pocket Monsters BW. But after what I had to go through yesterday, I decided to translate a different manga. One that I managed to get into the same summer I got the volumes of Pokémon Pocket Monsters. (I've even alluded to it in an older blog post.)
For those who don't know, Nameneko Matakichi's Strongest Legend: Don't Mess With Me! is an action/comedy manga that follows the adventures of a rough and tough cat named Matakichi who gets into fights with all sorts of delinquents. Following behind him is his best friend Chikuwa, who wishes to be just like his idol. I wanted to save this manga for after I finished the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga. But I managed to find some special chapters for it in a compilation book CoroCoro released.
Since the first volume was released around the time this chapter was published, it serves as a good way to introduce people to Don't Blame Me! while doing something fun and ridiculous with the characters. Which is exactly why I enjoyed this chapter so much. The action is just as awesome as it is in the manga itself, and it's amusing to see just how bizarre things can get in these short stories as they don't have to stick to the somewhat down-to-earth nature of the actual manga.
Looking back, I think this is the first original manga I've ever read. All of the other ones I've read were based on already existing media. This was also before I got into Beastars, so a manga with an original story and characters was something I needed a long time ago. It's certainly earned itself a new fan.
