Going storm chasing later and I'm hoping to get some good pics but it's always a toss up.

These aren't super clear because I took them on my phone and had to up the contrast (old phone problems 😵‍💫) but it's neat to see how quickly the mass of this storm moved in after the first photo.

Aurora Borealis Viewing guide

This will not contain any additional predictions or forecast interpretation because space weather is not my specialty. It is a major part of what I study but I'm only your dude if your want environmental satellite information and general meteorology info regurgitation.

AIGHT so if you haven't viewed the aurora before, here's some tips! 

Big caveat: you may not be able to see it with your naked eye even if the current Kp level indicates you should. ALL photos we see of the aurora are taken with extended exposure, that's how we get to see those bright colors at night. If you are in the contingent United States and are viewing it with your eyeballs, it is still super cool but it won’t look exactly like a photo.

Choose the Right Location

To maximize your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis, keep an eye on the Kp level, this will indicate how far south we are affected by the geomagnetic activity. If you're in the northern hemisphere, find a place with a clear view to the north. Similarly, if you're in the southern hemisphere, look for a spot with a clear view to the south. 

Currently, the north magnetic pole is approximately 400 km (250 miles) away from the geographic pole, located in the islands of northeast Canada. Remember, even if you're 1000 km (600 miles) further north from the aurora, you can still catch a stunning display from the right vantage point.

Find somewhere DARK

For the best chances at seeing the lights, it must be dark. Get away from city lights and light pollution as much as possible. The full moon can also affect the apparent brightness of the aurora, so keep in mind that the moon may influence your chances of viewing

A general assumption is that the best time to witness the Aurora Borealis is usually within an hour or two of midnight, between 10 PM and 2 AM local time BUT that may not be the case for every event or location. As the level of geomagnetic activity increases, the active aurora hours expand towards the evening and morning. While you may still see aurora displays in the evening and morning, they are usually less active and become much harder to see. So, be prepared to stay up late and keep an eye on space weather reports (and the sky) during those hours when it will be the darkest.
