An Observation

When my parents left Mexico to give me a better life in the U.S. they never imagined that they would be entering a country where they (and their children) would automatically be placed at a disadvantage for jobs, education, and civil rights. They didn’t know they would enter a country where they would get made fun of for having an accent even if they could speak and understand english perfectly. They didn’t know that the only work they could find would give them very little money and that they would constantly be threatened to get deported by their employers if they spoke up about it. They didn’t know that because of that their children had no chance at going to one of those gringo schools with good teachers, and that as their children grew up in this society, they found it normal to assume that white people had the right to a better life but they didn’t. They didn’t know their children would be so affected by an anti-latino society that they decided to stop speaking spanish because you could fit in better with people that way. They didn’t know that in the eyes of this society, their mexican culture would look cheap and ghetto, not worth embracing or understanding.

I hate it when people justify abuse towards illegal immigrants by saying that they “sit back and don’t do anything” or that they “get all the American advantages without working for any of it.” Does living in a country where you get no stable pay, no respect, and no right to speak up about it seem like something a lazy person who lives at an advantage would willingly endure? Does it sound like we live with all the American advantages when we are forced to hide our culture because it makes people uncomfortable, and then see it appropriated so much even our spanish isn’t taken seriously? Arguments against illegal immigrants make me sick because essentially they are arguments that promote dehumanizing people by making them out to be monsters who have no rights because they snuck into this country.
