My First Solo Trip
Back in October , I decided to ta a solo trip . I set my eyes on Tulum . I had been to Mexico a few times and to the contrary of what people may think Mexico is a wonderful destination for a vacation , extremely safe .
Mexico is always warm, sunny , fun, the beaches are beautiful . People over there are friendly and very welcoming .
This time , I was looking for a friendly , calm place where I could just really chill without the awkwardness of been alone on a trip .
I read a lot of blogs and articles online about a little place two hours away from Cancun called Tulum , and boy I am so happy I made the decision to book that trip
So let me tell you how I spend $800 and had the best 5 days 4 nights trip ever.
This is where the money went
$250 on a round trip flight NYC JFK to Cancun Mexico $288 on 5 days 4 night at AHUA Tulum $160 for my final bill when I was leaving the hotel (for food , drinks , renting of a bicycles for 3 days) $100 on activities and shopping (including 3 bottles of liquor , a painting of Freda Kahlo and some miscellaneous items)
Let me just say Tulum is a wonderful vacation destination because its quiet and peaceful, Beautiful and people are so relax and chill.
I will suggest you to avoid chain hotel on a trip like this and definitely avoid the typical resort , instead go for a boutique hotel , or lodge . Lodges and camping hotel are very popular in Tulum , you can find them line up by the beach without the overwhelming feeling of the area been surrounded by tourists .
I stayed at a friendly eco lodge called Ahua Tulum , the hotel is a beach front hotel made of 23 cabana rooms . All wonderful with private bathroom . The smaller rooms have no ac unit , just a fan ceiling over the bed however its good enough and at night you can leave the windows open and listen to the sound of the beach and moving trees. In the morning the birds will wake you up for breakfast . Its not a traditional hotel , therefore the room has no TV or phone but the hotel does has free working wifi .
When it comes to food , the hotel has wonderful dish some more traditional than other but there is something wonderful about eating facing the ocean , specially at night . I suggest you to hotel hop , all the hotels in the area are friendly and welcome guest from other hotels. You can chill on the beach , have lunch or dinner . When it comes to transportation , I will say Taxi are very convenient and affordable . {In Mexico , if you take a taxi anywhere , the driver will always wait for you for at least 2 hours while you run your errands , eat lunch or diverse activities , unless you instruct him to leave ; the price is the same }
Most people however in Tulum walk or ride bikes , bikes can be rented from any hotel for $7 a day . Some places have vintage bikes which add a je ne sais quoi to your vacation and great for pictures .
While in Tulum , make time to be a beach bum, at least one day of your trip by sunbathing and sipping on the Mexican version off coco loco or on traditional , healthy fruit juice or smoothie {be naughty and ask them to add some liquor to it}
Food In Tulum is extremely cheap , so be nice and tip generously .Most restaurant add the gratuity but i believe great service deserve great tips.
If you are like me obsess with nature , go visit the Maya Ruins In Tulum , its beautiful and its worth the walk . The view from the ruins is breathtaking .
Another activity I suggest is snorkeling , Tulum has wonderful snorkeling spot and I must say its an amazing experience . It was my first time , the guides are very experienced and helpful . If you are not an experience swimmer a guide will stay with you all time and make sure you are safe . I went to see the sea turtles and fishes at Sian Ka'an , for approximatively 1 hr worth of snorkeling with a guide and the equipment I spend 500 pesos ($26) .
The list could go on of must do activities , but here are a few of my favorites , the canote (must experience) , zip lining at night , the monkey sanctuary.
Shopping in Mexico is another one of my favorite activity , buying a sugar skulls doll while in Mexico is a must . Every Time I go , I always end up by getting many souvenirs from the locals shops in town , avoid buying anything at the airport , the souvenirs are usually tacky , and overpriced .
Instead , one afternoon out of your trip , take a walk in town , have lunch there , you will get to eat some real traditional Mexican food and experience the town vibes .
My favorites items to get are , off course my skills dolls (all handmade) , tapestries for my apartment , jewelry box (hand painted) and sweets .
Overall I would say , if you are looking for a peaceful place , with good food , good drinks and some yoga Tulum is for you . Tulum is for people who believe that they are still beautiful places in this world where you do not need to be hooked to cable , iphone and technology.
A few Tips :
Bring Mexican pesos , if you bank in the US you can change US Dollars at no fees directly at the bank (may take a week)
Do not book transportation from or by the hole (they charge $250 round trip) Instead you can catch the shuttle bus who takes the same time , very comfortable some of them even have wifi for $60 one trip and if you book the round trip you save 20%
Do your research before leaving btw using the hashtag Tulum or Tuluming on IG and Pinterest / trip advisor
Travel light all you really need is a few clothes bathing suit and a pair of sandals
Remember to bring your books and magazine
Most hotel have free wifi
Here's a little bit of my vacation in Jalisco for you guys💙🇲🇽
