MHA fake tweets p.106
Rumi is such an interesting character to me specifically. Because for starters, she’s one of the very few too heroes not to attend UA, and is one of, if not the only too hero to work entirely solo.
She’s also a heteromorph, darker skinned (and fuck you Bones for whitewashing her) and a woman. All these factors combine to isolate Rumi from other Pro Heroes—she’s different from them. Additionally, Rumi has likely been subject to a lot of sexualization and bigotry from both fellow heroes and the citizens she protects, possibly contributing to her decision to be a solo hero.
While Rumi does call for help very occasionally, I imagine she feels pressured against doing so. She HAS to be the loudest, strongest most dominant person in a room, otherwise she’ll get no respect or voice at all. And we know her love of combat started in school, and while I’m certain it’s not fake it is her way of protecting herself.
How many threats do we think Rumi has gotten? How vigilant must she have to be?
Personally, I headcanon Rumi’s apartment is an incredibly well-kept secret—I think she used to live in a different one, but somebody found it and Rumi immediately moved. Her current apartment was arranged for her by an Underground hero, and I think she originally didn’t want to take the charity, but she hasn’t been found since.
I think she wanted to befriend Hawks because she saw him as something of a kindred spirit—another young, frequently sexualized heteromorph hero who didn’t go to U.A.
But of course…I doubt the Commission wanted Hawks to form any deep attachments, and Rumi isn’t stupid. She’d notice the distance and perceive it as rejection and/or underestimation because that’s what it usually is. This isn’t helped by Hawks’s sort of ditzy sexyman reputation, which doesn’t lend itself to assumption of being aware of or against misogyny or bigotry in general. Not to mention the headcanons of what the Commission has Hawks do to remain palatable, human enough. Things Rumi likely would be distressed by.
Not to mention Rumi’s own complicated relationship with her quirk—she’s proud of it, but also… She’s defensive and ashamed of the way people look at her and assume prey, the way her own damn brain seems to agree with it at times. She tries to be proud but oh she’s gotten so much shit for things she cannot control that she’s got some internalized issues.
And I think Hawks grieves not being able o get close to Rumi too—he thinks she’s really cool! Nobody can tell Rumi what to do. Nobody bosses her around. And she’s still an incredible hero. She still helps people! Rumi is the kind of person Hawks wishes he could be. I also think Hawks is a little unaware of the full extent of the sacrifices Rumi’s had to make for her independence and safety.
So in conclusion: Rumi and Hawks and the endless yawning well of soul-crushing loneliness, and the anxiety and the fear and the messy platonic yearning of it all.
