If you have time, would you share your dal recipe? I saw Tan's as well and I want to try it really badly!

Oh! I’m honored you asked me hehe...I’m not much of a cook but i’ll try my best to give you some kind of a recipe lol...

As far as quantities go you can follow what tan said. Here is the list of things i do differently:

1. I’m Indian so i use a pressure cooker for cooking dal. It takes much less time than boiling it. Rinse the dal well with water,  and add salt and turmeric powder. It might vary a little according to the brands of pressure cooker but 5-7 whistles would suffice for cooking dal. If you don’t have a pressure cooker you can do it the same way he showed it - boiling it in a closed pot.

2. He went for a thicker consistency but personally I like it a bit more loose as I like to have it with rice. And also once you achieve the consistency you want you might want to smoothen out the dal by churning/whisking. 

3. You can also add more vegetables like onion and tomatoes. Saute the onion and tomatoes in a pan with butter/oil and the rest of the spices(coriander powder,cumin powder,garam masala. Also I use green chilli instead of chilli powder. 

4. Once cooked enough, add the dal mixture and bring to a boil on low/medium flame. 

5. Add tadka and coriander. Personally for tadka i add garlic, Hing(Asafoetida in english) and 1-2 dried red chillis.

5. Top five formative books?

This is so hard. I think my answer would change depending on the mood I’m in, but here are my current thoughts. 

[aside from the Bible (and the Psalms, the Song of Solomon, and the gospel of Luke, in particular)]

Harry Potter series- my first and favorite fandom. Love Only Once by Johanna Lindsey (maybe the whole Malory series)- my first romance novel (stolen from my mom’s collection at roughly 11 years of age).  The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros- this book is so dear to me that I once memorized a chunk of it to perform at talent shows and the like. Moral Man, Immoral Society by Reinhold Niebuhr- my favorite ethics text; my copy is so marked up that you can barely read it. Love Poems from God- my comfort book, which I read whenever I feel sad. 

25. What’s your worldbuilding process like?

Hmm. I don’t know that I have a process. My worlds get built organically as I build my characters and my plots. With my ABO fics, I usually have a separate document where I keep notes about the biological details specific to that fic. With ‘i’ll fly away’ and ‘yet in thy dark streets shineth’, I did some work on the setting, as well, drawing maps, collecting photos of places, imagining the different industries in the towns etc. I’m doing a bit of the same with my current WIP. 

46. Past or present tense?

Present, for sure. I could make up a story about why, but the truth is I probably just started writing this way because it many of my favorite (smutty) authors were writing this way when I started out on my own. 

47. Single or dual/multi POV?

Single. I find it less confusing that way and it feels more authentic to the way life actually unfolds. But I do sometimes like switching between POVs for different sections of the story. 

54. Favorite first line/opening you’ve written?

None of them are so memorable that they come to mind immediately. I think most of my first lines are relatively mundane, simply meant to draw the reader into the moment where the story begins. I’ve certainly never agonized over a first line and maybe it shows.

i have had some wine now too. and lost my answers twice. 

9)  Talk about little things on your body that you like the most.

i love my hands and feet, especially my feet. my toes are shaped very nicely and are very proportionate to one another and to my foot as a whole. i love having painted fingernails and toenails (red and sparkly!), but i rarely (once a year, maybe?) paint them myself because i am lazy and cheap and forgetful. i get both of these (the hands and feet, i mean, but maybe also the lazy and cheap and forgetful, too) from my very lovely mother who confessed once when she’d had a few glasses of wine that she used to dream of being a hand model.

@dedkake my sister also has beautiful hands. hers are more lovely than mine, her fingers more slender, but my feet are prettier (her second toe is longer than her big one! for shame!), so its even. she owns less feminine-type things than i do, but she’s very vain about her nails. i remember listening to them clack against the keys when we took piano lessons together. 

a previous version of this answer included a photo of my back, which is also very beautiful, but i decided to leave it out this time. another day maybe.

25) Talk about an ex-best friend.

one of my college best friends moved to a far-away city after we graduated. she was an atheist and a feminist and a communist. we spent nearly every moment together either deep in meaningful conversation about family or politics or religion or doubled over laughing. we travelled europe- just the two of us- one summer and i loved her (a whole different story there!). 

she told me that she was having difficulty making friends in her new place. i told her what i would do- find a church community. to my surprise, she gave it a try. she ended up at a very, very conservative church, though. within six months, she’d broken up with her boyfriend because he let her make too many decisions; he wasn’t acting like the ‘head of the relationship.’ 

she messaged to ask my opinion on a mission she was considering ‘to save souls’ in indonesia and was very confused when i called it out as being bullshit, too colonialist for my jesus. 

i attended her wedding a couple of years back and the girl her new best friend described in the toast wasn’t one i recognized. instead of the loud, spunky, hilarious, intellectually curious friend i’d known, i was supposed to be toasting a ‘soft-spoken sweetheart, really demure woman, the perfect wife.’ 

that broke my heart. 

31)  Talk about what you think death is like.

i don’t know, obviously- no one does- but sometimes people treat me like i might, so i just want to throw that out there so that you all know that i know that i don’t know. 

i hope and believe that death is like being born again into a great oneness, into perfection. i don’t really think we’ll have bodies or memories- maybe we won’t even have any sense of self-awareness. but i believe that after we die we’ll be connected to everyone and everything, most especially god. 

i think it can be helpful and hopeful for us who are still living to imagine death as a concrete place and people who’ve died as having bodies and memories that connect them to us, but i don’t think that’s what the experience of death will be like when we’re in it. 

39) Talk about things you wish you’d known earlier.

i’m not a person who likes to look back like that. i’m glad my life has spun out exactly the way it has- even the hardships and the heartbreaks.
