To Be Detemined- Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Harry’s POV:
We were all wondering where Cody had gone. Niall and Evan were getting hungry, Cody’s parents had left to a meeting, I was debating on what to cook, Zayn was complaining about how the rain ruined his hair, Liam kept on telling Zayn that Cody wasn’t outside, and Louis? He was whining for carrots.
“Why is it raining so much? It’s summer for crying out loud!” Zayn exclaimed and shut the sliding glass door, shaking his hair out.
“It’s Seattle, it rains all the freaking time here.” Evan handed Louis a bowl of baby carrots. His face lit up with joy as he thanked her and nibbled on a carrot.
“What does everybody want for dinner?” I asked since I had offered to cook because it was our first night here. Everybody turned their attention to me and gathered around the island counter.
“I have an idea. Even if you don’t know her well, how do you think Cody is? Like have you noticed anything?” Evan asked us all.
“Well, she seems a bit sad to be honest.” Niall said sadly.
“Yeah.” The rest agreed.
“Is she always like that?” Louis asked Evan.
“She can be a lot, but normally she’s not this upset, especially on a day like this. I’m here, you boys are here, and her parents are gone.” Evan explained. “So, I think we should fix something she likes.” She suggested.
“I wonder what she likes…” I wondered out loud.
“Pizza, burgers, pancakes, salmon, pasta-“ Evan listed off a bunch of things before pausing like a lightbulb had just lit above her head. “Pasta. That’s her favorite.”
“What kind specifically?” I asked.
“The longer tube-like ones and the swirly ones. I don’t know specifics, she just loves pasta.” She shrugged.
“Well then we’ll make a buffet. Let’s get going everybody!” I gave everybody certain tasks to complete. After Zayn finished the breadsticks, I stuck them in the oven along with the macaroni bake. He went downstairs to check if Cody was there. An hour later, dinner was perfectly set out and ready to go.
“Alright, everybody hide! I hope this will cheer her up.” Evan quietly squealed and hid behind the pillar.
“Dinner’s ready!” we all called. A faint “okay” was heard from downstairs followed by footsteps. I assumed they were Cody’s and Zayn’s.
“Zayn, why are you covering my eyes? Oh my gosh, it smells amazing up here!” said Cody as they neared the top of the stairs. He carefully led her into the kitchen. After he released his hands from her eyes, we all jumped out of our hiding spots and yelled.
“Surprise!” we all shouted. The delighted expression plastered on her face was well worth it. Another look I noticed was Evan’s. Her face lit up with excitement and satisfaction from her best friend being happy. I had a feeling that this sort of happiness didn’t come easily for Cody.
“Oh my, you guys! I can’t believe this! You are all the best.” Tears of joy brimmed Cody’s eyes so I ran to her for a hug.
“You like?” I held my arms open, awaiting her answer.
“Of course! I haven’t known you boys for long and you still did this for me. Thank you.” She accepted my hug and we embraced each other tightly for a few moments.
“It was Evan’s idea.” I whispered in her ear. She slowly let go and then tackled Evan in a bear hug.
“Evan!!” she shouted and held onto her best friend tightly.
“Cody!!” Evan laughed and hugged her back.
“Thanks, bro.” said Cody.
“Anytime.” Evan replied. “But can we eat now? I’m absolutely starving!”
“Yes, pleaseee?” Niall whined and rubbed his stomach.
“Of course, let’s dish up!” I chuckled and grabbed two plates, one for Cody and one for myself. The food was all lined up on the counters. After we piled our plates with food, we all headed to the dining room in the front because we would all fit at the table there.
I pulled out a chair for Cody and she accepted, batting her long eyelashes as she peered up at me and said a quiet “thank you”. She sat at the head of the table while I sat on one side of her and Zayn sat on the other. I invited Evan to sit next to me. Liam sat across from me and Niall across from Evan, Louis sat at the other head across from Cody. We all dug into the food.
“Oh my gosh, this is amazingly fantastic!” Cody gushed. The others agreed, nodding vigorously.
“Oh my gosh, this is great.” Liam said in a valley girl accent. We all burst out in laughter as he made a super girly face.
“Why thank you,” I laughed, “we all made it.” I thanked her and beamed.
“So, boys, Evan and I were thinking of a shopping trip this weekend. Care to join?” Cody asked.
“Yes!” we all shouted through mouthfuls of food.
“Why can’t we go tomorrow?” asked Louis.
“Well, you could all go, but I have school.” Cody explained.
“Then we should wait for the weekend so Cody can come with us.” I suggested. The others nodded in agreement. We ate the rest of our meal in silence, the occasional small talk, but silent other than that because the food was so good.
“Ugh. I’m going to explode.” Cody leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes.
“Same.” I agreed. The dinner was pretty delectable, if I do say so myself. I’m very satisfied that Cody likes it, she seemed to gain lots of positive attitude from it. She was acting a lot happier than she was earlier. “Are you feeling alright, Cody?” I asked.
“Yep!” she chirped. “Thank you all for the lovely dinner.”
“Of course!” we all replied.
“So, I-“ Cody started to say something, but Evan had cut her off without realizing it.
“What should we do tonight?” Evan asked.
“Well, erm…” Cody spoke but was cut off yet again.
“We could just hang around and finish the movie tonight. Maybe tomorrow we could have a picnic or something?” Louis suggested. Cody sighed just as a big conversation started between everybody. She got up and slumped to the kitchen with her dishes.
“Sandwiches!” Evan shouted.
“Burgers!” Niall shouted back.
“How about we stop arguing and just have tacos?!” I interjected into the conversation. “Excuse me.” I grabbed my dishes and slipped away into the kitchen to find Cody holding her plate under the running water, not moving. She must be spaced out or something.
I cleared my throat. “Cody?” I set down my dishes and lightly placed my hand on her shoulder. She slowly finished washing both her dishes and mine and put them into the dishwasher.
“What’s up, Harry?” she painted a smile on her face for me.
“You were trying to say something at the table, weren’t you?” I asked, eyebrows raised.
“Uhm… it isn’t important.” She said quickly.
“But you’re upset.” I said. She looked pretty paranoid that people kept on interrupting.
“Well it obviously isn’t important if people don’t even care enough to stop and listen for two seconds.” She crossed her arms. “I don’t even mean to be so upset about it, but my family interrupts WAY too much. I hate it. If only they could’ve heard me say-“ all of a sudden, her phone rang.
“Some people want it all, but I don’t want nothing at all, if I ain’t got you baby, if I ain’t got you baby.” The song “If I Ain’t Got You” , the live acoustic version by Maroon 5, started playing.
“Ohmygosh!” she squealed and answered the phone. “Hello? Hey!” she motioned that she was going downstairs and raced down to the basement.
I wondered who was on the phone with her and what she was going to say at the table. Everybody flowed into the kitchen with their dishes.
“What was that?” Evan asked.
“I… I don’t really know to be honest. She was a bit upset with you guys interrupting her. She was trying to tell us all something, but you all kept on cutting her off.” I let out. I was a bit upset at them because Cody was finally happy at dinner, then not. Now? She seems fine with whoever’s on the phone.
“Really? I didn’t even realize…” even trailed off and her expression became full of guilt and sadness.
“Wow…” Louis frowned.
“Yeah, so we should all-“ I stopped talking when Cody went dashing down the hall and up the stairs. “Cody! What’s going on?” I called. We all stood there in silence, awaiting her response. She ran down the stairs wearing a long sleeve grey tribal print cropped top that only showed a little bit of her midriff, right below her bellybutton. She also wore black leggings and a pair of regular folded over fuzzy grey uggs. Her long, blonde hair was straightened and out of its bun. Her makeup looked touched up and a black Juicy Couture bag hung from her elbow.
“I’ll be back later!” she grabbed a set of keys off the island counter and started to walk out to her garage, but Evan grabbed her arm.
“Where are you going? What’s going on?” Evan asked in bewilderment.
“I’m going to the airport, stay here with the boys.” She replied.
“What?! Why?” she exclaimed.
“I need to pick him up!” Cody smiled.
“Who?” Evan asked and groaned.
“Tyler! He’s back!” Cody said excitedly and ran out to the garage. Evan started pacing back and forth with a thoughtful look on her face.
“Tyler, Tyler, Tyler… I think I remember… Tyler.. Weird.” She mumbled. All of us gave her strange looks and fell silent, even her. We all started to quietly discuss the matter. Most of what we were asking was “Why is she going?” and “Who’s Tyler?”. Zayn was the one to break the tension by grabbing hold of Evan’s shoulders and turning her to face him.
“Who the hell is Tyler?” he asked.
